Planet of the Dead info

especially since it's co-written by Gareth Roberts

This is my biggest worry. I wasn't exactly a big fan of Shakespeare Code or Unicorn and the Wasp.

Well the Shakespeare code I liked, it was when The Unicorn and the Wasp essentially reused so much of TSC that I became worried.

His Sarah Jane stuff is somewhat derivative but when he and RTD collaborated on Invasion of the Bane it was highly enjoyable.

Hmm, that's very true. I guess I'm hoping it's more RTD than Gareth.

I think RTD just could use a good, strong sounding board to encourage the right ideas and suggest rethinking sloppier stuff. Hopefully, Gareth can offer this as a collaborator.

OR

RTD would be good to help guide and encourage another writer's ideas, improving upon what works, and getting rid of what doesn't.

We can always hope, anyway.

Given that RTD almost always devises basic plots, hands the idea off to a writer, then does a ground-up rewrite of almost every episode, one really wonders how this is any different from the MO on "The Shakespeare Code" and "The Unicorn and the Wasp", except that he gets his name in the opening.

My guess is that he probably was more involved at the story stage--on American TV, while RTD would get a "teleplay by" credit, I don't think that he's involved enough where he could get a "story by" credit on the other episodes.

^Sometime around Easter. A more specific date won't be available for some time, not least because the production team aren't sure exactly when it'll be finished.

I certainly think they need to give the character some closure before Courtney dies...

A Sarek style deathbed scene? Probably a better way to do it, but it would be nice to see the Doctor/loss thing have a natural death in there.

Anyone heard the autobiography "A Soldier In Time" that Courtney did for Big Finish? He's very much enjoyed his time on the show and definately not adverse to returning (as seen in his SJA appearance) and would love to see a closure to the Brig even if was death bed one. Not to kill the character off because he's sick of it but just to complete the Brigadier's journey.

I'm slightly bemused by the 'No companion... features a young companion' style contradiction in the quote, but looking forward to seeing what happens.

Probably one those people who encounter The Doctor, have their lives turned upside-round and then never see him again.

Well I'd never complain at seeing Michelle Ryan on the telly

Wonder when we'll know who Smith's companion's gonna be though...

^ without seeing the epiosde is the Michelle Ryan character still in the running, Jenny is of course.

as for when we know, well I guess that will be when they start filming

RTD said in a recent interview that casting for the specials was proving difficult because they didn't want to ruin an actress' chance to be the series five companion by casting her in a one-off, so unless he's lying again Ryan won't be Smith's companion.

^ it would not be the first time a character has appeared in a "specail" and then returned to be a proper companion, my example being Donna, who was in a Christmas specail, but maybe Ryan doesn't want to be companion, Moff doesn't want her, and everyone is happy for her to do just the one episode.

There most be alot of successful actress wanting there names on the list, and a few who find there names in the press when they dont want it.

Well new Producer Piers Wenger said very recently that they'd only just started the casting process for the S5 Companion, so unless we want to start calling the new lot inveterate liars too...

The difference is that was under the same Producer. Moffat will want to create his own Companion not take one of RTD's sloppy seconds. :)

Unless, of course, he and RTD created the character together. Collaboration ain't unheard of, y'know.

Between Davies and Moffat? Can you imagine Journey's End meets Blink? :guffaw:

Cue sixty billion weeping angels and a plan to destroy the entire universe? ;)

Personally I think Ryan would make a much better one off companion than a regular one.

RTD wrote Midnight. He's a brilliant writer. He's just very hit and miss when it comes to delivering the payoff on a season-long arc.
