Pixar's Newt Canceled replaced by Monsters Inc 2?

Last week they reported that Newt was "dead" and rumours of MI2.

Now we get more talk...
Pixar has never been the type of studio to just rush sequels of their hit films in order to make a few extra bucks. Hell, the only sequel they've ever put out was for Toy Story, and that took them four years (and then another 11 to release the third installment.) But now, much to the guaranteed joy of millions of fans now in their mid to late 20s, Monsters Inc. 2 is heading into production.

Latino Review claims to have a man on the inside who has let slip that Sully and Mike are due for another adventure to the big screen. Since this isn't coming directly from the golden mouths of Disney or Pixar executives, take this with a grain of salt. It's happened before that some over-zealous employee hears the higher ups talking by the water cooler and leaks everything they say to the scoop-hungry media only to have said higher ups take it all back in one fell swoop.

But it's worth noting that Pixar recently cancelled a upcoming project called Newt, which may have been a step to clear up their schedule for MI:2. We'll keep you posted on all news Monsters Inc. that comes our way.

I don't like this. This year it's Toy Story 3, then it's Cars 2, then The Bear and the Bow, then Monsters Inc 2? Way too many sequels for me. Plus frankly Cars and MI don't need sequels.

^^ I'm with you. I didn't even like Cars... but given the astronomical merchandising sales, it was kind of a given there'd be a sequel. I just really have no burning desire for Monsters, Inc 2.

That said, I trust Pixar... so I'm sure if Lasseter gave this a green light they have a good story idea firmly in place.

And if Pixar is developing Sequelitis... then where is my Incredibles 2, dammit!!

Who wants to bet that Monsters Inc. 2 involved the wacky adventures of Mike, Sully and the now rebellious and petulant teenage Boo?

The last Pixar film I tried to watch was Wall-E and I got bored halfway through. Pass.

Next to A Bug's Life, I think Monsters Inc is the weakest Pixar, not that interested in a sequel. I wonder what happened with Newt?

I didn't like Cars at first, though it's grown on me over time. But the rumors I've seen about the sequel being set
at rally car races around the world
have piqued my interest.

This is disappointing news. I was looking forward to Newt and I'm not too keen on all of these sequels. But as others have said, I have faith in Lasseter. I just wish it wasn't for Cars (which I did enjoy). I think only Toy Story (following the themes of the second film applied to Andy) and The Incredibles (but I know that's not going to happen) deserve sequels.

I think ya mean Toy Story 2. And considerin' Pixar runs Disney's animation studio these days, it doesn't really matter.

Seems to me, that if Brad Bird says what he wants done with his Pixar work, the others will listen. He says he will be the one involved in an Incredibles sequel, than that's the way it will be.

As for a Monsters, Inc sequel, I can live without it. Monsters, Inc is at the next to last on my list of Pixar films, just above Ratatoulie, which was easily the worst they've ever done.

^ See, where for me, A Bug's Life is their "worst" movie, with Cars coming up second... although that's kind of not fair. Bad Pixar is still better than basically every other animated or family movie made in the same time period.

I've heard Brad Bird say that he has some ideas for Incredibles 2, but wouldn't be interested in doing anything with it until after he gets 1908 off the ground... and John Lasseter has been very public in saying he has no interest in doing another Incredibles without Bird.

Nope the third one, Pixar wasn't bought by Disney until a few years ago. Shortly before that Disney said they were going to make a third one and the rumour was that it would deal with Buzz being recalled.

Pixar then sold itself to Disney and started working on a third one themselves.

First I've heard of that...I remember, there was a thing about the (first) Toy Story sequel a few years back, about how Disney was goin' to make it without Pixar, it was goin' to be direct to video, traditional animation feature or something retarded like that.

An Incredibles 2 is long overdue.

Could not agree more. :bolian:

I actually like Monsters, Inc quite a bit, more excited about this news than either the Toy Story or Cars sequels.

I do agree though that is an awful lot of sequels!

The Incredibles is Brad Bird's baby, and he's said he's not really interested in doing one (in fact, he's not even at Pixar now).

Does he own it? Just because he made it means nothing. Disney was going to make Toy Story 3 without Pixar.
Which would have been a terrible idea. Bird wrote and directed the film; it's his creation; the studio has said it's not interested in continuing without him.

Disney is one fucked up company.

I think the whole reason why Pixar was sold to Disney is so they could keep more control over their movies and not have Disney make Toy Story 26 where the toys travel through time back to the Ice Age.

I am definitely worried that Pixar may be getting sequel-itis. Toy Story deserved a sequel, and the follow-up was actually very good. There really isn't a need for Toy Story 3, but since I love them more than any other Pixar film, I'm willing to go along with it. But Cars and Monsters, Inc. do not need sequels. At all.

I really like Pixar as a company. I enjoy maybe half of their films. Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo and Up! are my absolute favorites. A Bug's Life and Ratatouille are my least favorites. Everything else (Monsters, Inc., Cars, The Incredibles, Wall-E) kinda falls into the middle.
