"Pirates Cove" by Steven Fender

Bumped into this on Facebook.

A quick Google search tells me it's a Kickstarter-funded (to the tune of $4300) fan fiction novel. Something tells me Pocket Books won't be thrilled.

EDIT: Stephen Fender, not Steven

^The Enterprise-E is in the upper left corner, firing phasers at the Intrepid-class ship. Still, not very good cover composition.

I found these "Deep Space Nine" books on Amazon the other day:
The Expendables
Rosenthal
Founders
The Expendables is the number 2 bestselling Star Trek ebook in the KIndle store.

Even the descriptions of these are written horribly. I can't imagine trying to read through a whole novel like that!

Couple that with the fact that they call themselves DS9 books, yet most of the characters mentioned in the descriptions or seen in the previews are Next Generation characters.

I know we have gained some great new Trek authors from the realms of fan fiction and the Strange New Worlds competitions, but there's a reason fan fiction isn't sanctioned and why most fan fiction authors will never see anything more than this sort of self-publication. I say buyer beware.

A bit more Googling shows Stephen Fender scrubbed Pirate's Cove from fanfic sites prior to publication. He's also the guy behind several Four Years War manuals and novels, some of which were featured on the Axanar website recently. He's raised quite a bit of money on Kickstarter for all of his stuff:
Romulan War Tech Manual - $18,968
The Four Years War - $11,907
TNG: Pirate's Cove - $4,345

Why's this all been allowed?

I'm guessing he's been flying under the radar . . . as opposed to being "allowed."

I remembered that Amazon has some sort of authorized fan-fic deal after it was mentioned in the eBooks thread that people are selling Trek fan-fic.

It's called Kindle Worlds, but Star Trek isn't one of the participating franchises. So, yeah, I can't explain this. It's not like those books that are just print-outs of random Wikipedia articles. Those at least make a kind of sense.

Drop a mail to Simon & Schuster. I assume they have a legal department which will take care of it.

There's a lot more than these out there. I mentioned in a couple other threads that I've stumbled across a few while looking around on Amazon.

Yes some big franchises in there if anyone fancies writing a GI joe book.
