I think that as long as everyone keeps repeating this that will make it so...even if it's not.

None of us has any idea what it is at this point. But we're all very sure.
Yep, absolutely correct. Unless anyone posting in here has a RECENT copy of the script (and the fact that one or two folks here have seen EARLY copies doesn't mean all that much anymore, boys and girls, trust me on that one at least!), none of us REALLY know anything.

Abrams and Co could be making a comedy musical for all any of us REALLY know. It could be set on identical replicas of the original sets that suddenly unfold, Transformer fashion, into a big dance set complete with synchronized swimming by miniskirt-wearing Redshirt babes...

Bottom line... even having seen an early script means NOTHING,and very few folks in here have even seen that much.

So statements that "this is what WILL happen" are silly at best, arrogant presumption at worst.

None of us... even the would-be "voices from on-high"... know anything... AT ALL... about what we're pontificating about. We're all just stating our preferences or opinions.

It's just that some of us recognize and admit that we're just stating opinions, and others want our opinions accepted as Divine Revelation (tm)

It's modern day minstrel pidgin: the fact that some blacks--the most educationally and economically disadvantaged among us--actually do speak that way makes it no less racially incendiary. Indeed, by insinuating that all blacks--even highly intelligent, highly intellectual (not synonymous), highly educated Starfleet officers (cf. Sisko and Tuvok) speak that way, it is astoundingly bigotted. Just a joke? I've heard a lot of jokes: the Klan has millions of 'em.

Agreed. Personally though I missed the post because I was a little pissed off at being called a racist for suggesting that they remain consistent with race and gender for a story taking place within the existing continuity. I'm glad that the new film will take place in the same universe so to speak but if they had gone with a reboot I would still have wanted to see it and it wouldn't have made a blind difference to me what enthnicity and gender choices were made so long as it was a good story with interesting characters.

An aside: Though Akira Class was way too quick on calling racism when people objected to casting against racial type, Kelso's post--employing pernicious racial stereotypes to lampoon the very idea--betrayed as much racism as anything short of comig flat out and using a slur or tying a noose from an oak tree ("a prank," according to the Jena school board). Funny how it's the former who gets dog-piled while the latter gets nothing from you guys. Keep up the good work!

I was just trying to wind up Akira Class (who is quite obviously trolling this forum).

It was not my intention to offend or belittle you (or any of the other constructive and reasonable posters on this forum).

You have my most sincere apology.

Translation: You are trolling me. This is against the rules. Mods, please warn Kelso for trolling me and for his racist post earlier.

(who is quite obviously trolling this forum).

I raised a valid point and you responded with racial stereotypes. I'll thank you to keep your accusations in the appropriate forum.

It was not my intention to offend or belittle you (or any of the other constructive and reasonable posters on this forum).

Accepted. Now, maybe you'll think before you post

If they want to warn me for that... I'll take it. One warning in 6 years is pretty good.

I have no problem with your idea to cast an african american in the role of Kirk or Spock. Hell, start a thread and I'll throw in some suggestions.

Calm down.

Never mind my comments smacking of racism, your allegations are not only offensive but "smack" of you having a giant fucking penis on your head!

One warning for flaming. This crosses the line.

Forget about the "fans are too obsessed with Trek stuff to the exclusion of important things" notion - clearly, a lot of us shouldn't be encouraged to discuss anything more important than TV shows.

One warning for flaming. This crosses the line too.

One warning for trolling. Posting to anger a poster is against the rules.

I don't see how. I double-checked, now I'm going to triple-check.

And while I am at it, did TPTB give ANY consideration to having an African American man in one of the top roles? Why not a black Spock or a black Kirk? Who says that they HAVE to be white just because the previous actors playing them where? IDIC my ass.

Though it pains me to have to say this, don't bring politics into this forum again. It doesn't mix. I wish it did, but it doesn't.

Thank you.

It's that subtle form of trolling that occurs when one enters a thread about [random subject that has nothing to do with race] and then starts accusing people of being racist; which unfortunately puts many on the defensive; which then encourages the name-calkler to become even more bold; and then the whole thing derails into a big fat mess.

And then the name-caller ends up accepting an apology that was never intended for him; pats himself on the back; and then does it all again another day.

But like I said; it's subtle. ;)

And somewhere far away from here... Chris Pine is crying.

Opening to briefly comment.

Though I understand your point there is still doubt in my mind as to whether or not that's the case. I'm not going to warn without solid proof and total certainty of a poster's intentions.

I've looked at Akira's posts, seem some of what's been posted in TNZ, and I'll remind him now that this isn't TNZ and not to introduce something that will derail the thread again because, as we all know, we'll end up in a situation like this again, so next time I'd issue a warning on that basis.
