pilot season - and so it begins...

I'm very much looking forward to Undercovers and Kindreds. Abrams and Kelley are the only tv veterans I trust will make something I will like. I'm also interested in "Ride Along" by Shawn Ryan. I didn't like The Unit all, but The Shield was brilliant television. I'll check out Terra Nova, but Spielberg's track record on tv isn't all that great. "Taken" and "Into The West" weren't exactly hits. Still, dino's!

I don't like what I've heard about "Off the Map" (medical drama from the makers of "Grey's Anatomy"), but if it's the only way to get Caroline Dhavernas back on TV regularly then I may have to watch.

Anything from the Grey's team is likely to be too cloying and smarmy for my tastes. I literally can't tolerate more than two seconds of that show, and I've tried! :rommie:

Update on the horse race:

TERRA NOVA: Practically given a 13-episode order with Brannon Braga on board as showrunner.
Braga or no Braga, I wants my dinos! :D
THE STATION: Doesn’t look good.
Aw! :( But it's a tricky topic to pull off. Would work better on cable.

THE CAPE & THE EVENT: Somehow, the high-concept drama about a former cop-turned-superhero and the conspiracy thriller got lumped together from the get-go. The network is looking to pick up only one of them. The Cape seems to have the edge at the moment.
Rats! If it's one or the other, I'd prefer The Event. (And if it's being "lumped" with The Cape, I suspect The Event must have sf/f elements. NBC just wants one new sf/f, maybe a midseason replacement for the final 13 ep season of Heroes?)

CHAOS: The CIA drama directed by Brett Ratner still has buzz.
Yippee! :bolian:
[CBS] UNTITLED MEDICAL DRAMA: A maybe. Has John Wells as executive producer and a strong cast led by Sissy Spacek and Skeet Ulrich going for it.
I wanna see this one for the cast.
NO ORDINARY FAMILY. Looks good sight unseen.
Great! Love the cast and the premise.
HOW TO BE A BETTER AMERICAN: Not looking good.
Aw. But like The Station, edgy humor is tough to pull off. If they can't do it well, better to just let it go.

HELLCATS: Looks very strong, very on-brand.
Hurray! Ben Browder back on TV. Even if being "on-brand" for the CW is a scary way of phrasing things...

BETWIXT: Cooling off at the moment.
Too bad. I would have given it a shot. But it might still bounce back.

I am very happy the HAWAII FIVE 0 pilot got picked up. Its a reboot, not some silly show about McGarrett's son. That was the plot for the thankfully forgotten pilot with Gary Busey years ago...

Update! :)

FOX

No mention of Terra Nova - but they won't dis Spielberg. ;)

NBC

The Event and The Cape are still in contention. Given NBC's needs for shows to fill Leno's slots, I don't understand why they can't both get picked up. Even if The Event has sci fi content not apparent in the brief descriptions of its premise, it's still very different from The Cape. Any network desperate enough to give Heroes 13 more episodes can pick both these shows up, frak it! :klingon:

CBS

Chaos - Now listed as a dark horse. CBS doesn't need to pick up a lot, so this is worrysome.

Untitled Medical Project
- no word of it, probably dead. :(

ABC

No Ordinary Family - Apparently ABC's favorite show (but this time last year, I seem to recall that title went to FlashForward).

"Family" in particular makes Disney execs giddy, as the project's concept screams franchise -- given its family appeal, sci-fi elements and potential to serve as an event-style series.
Is "event-style series" a codeword for Lost? ;) Anyway, No Ordinary Family certainly has no competition for ABC's sf/f timeslots - everything ABC has tried is floundering, cancelled, or as good as cancelled. And despite the appealing cast, I don't see why No Ordinary Family will succeed in recapturing what Lost had any more than any of the previous attempts have.

CW

Betwixt and Hellcats look likely.

We're coming down the home stretch! How many of my favorite ponies are still in the race?

NBC

The Cape seems to have "a shot" but The Event has better buzz at the moment and is "in real consideration". Some even say The Event a lock.
Yay! If it has to be one or the other, I'd prefer The Event.

ABC
NO ORDINARY FAMILY: Among most talked about because it's Greg Berlanti.Hasn't screened yet.
All the buzz has been good so far, though.

FOX

TERRA NOVA: Given a 13-episode order with Brannon Braga on board as showrunner. A midseason show because of the elaborate visual effects involved in recreating the age of dinosaurs. (Steven Spielberg is personally recruiting some of the best names in the vfx industry for the series.)
This one would have to jump through the screen and start chomping on Fox execs (what a lovely thought) not to get picked up.

CBS

CHAOS: The CIA drama directed by Brett Ratner has buzz. "They like the chemistry, and it has a shot".
:bolian:

HELLCATS: Ensemble cheerleading drama is hot.

BEN BROWDER! Yay! :D

BETWIXT: Also in the running.

NBC has picked up The Event, Love Bites, and Outsourced. The first two are one-hour shows, while Outsourced is half-hour. All three are NBC/Universal productions.

Then there goes The Cape. It seems it was a one or the other situation with The Event.

Here's the description of The Event from NBC's press release:

“The Event” is an emotional high-octane conspiracy thriller that follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter, “The Class”), an Everyman who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his fianc?e, Leila (Sarah Roemer, “Disturbia”), and unwittingly begins to expose the biggest cover-up in U.S. history. Sean’s quest will send ripples through the lives of an eclectic band of strangers, including: newly elected U.S. President Martinez (Blair Underwood, “Dirty Sexy Money”); Sophia (Emmy Award nominee Laura Innes, “ER”), who is the leader of a mysterious group of detainees; and Sean’s shadowy father-in-law (Scott Patterson, “Gilmore Girls”). Their futures are on a collision course in a global conspiracy that could ultimately change the fate of mankind.

Ian Anthony Dale (“Daybreak”) and Emmy winner Zeljko Ivanek (“Damages”) also star in the ensemble drama.

The Event has a promising cast, and a whiff of being the latest show to unwisely try to ape the success of Lost. But I will more than happily give it a shot and hope it has a bit of sf/f in it...

Another update!

The silly notion that The Event needs to compete with The Cape (they sound like very different show types) appears to be dead. Hopefully we can see both.

At one point it seemed like high-concept dramas "The Event" and "The Cape" were an either/or proposition, but now the former is picked up and the latter is generating unexpected heat.
