Indeed. The disaster at Rigel VII (which resulted in several injuries and deaths) was fresh on Pike's mind when The Cage took place. So that's most likely why he was so depressed. He feels responsible for the whole thing.

By the time DSC happens, he would have gotten over it. Back to the Pike he's supposed to be.

According to Bob Orci, Bruce Greenwood's Pike has a backstory which never made it to screen where he was part of an underground railroad getting Orion women out of slavery. Cadet Gaila was one of his rescues. I wonder if any of that will be carried over to Disco, since showrunner Alex Kurtzman co-wrote the movie with him.

This is the first time I have ever heard of that! And it's totally fucking nuts. Which seems appropriate for Orci.
But have you any sources for that? I always dig "unfinished ideas"!

I think it was originally from Bob Orci's Q&A's on Trekmovie.com in 2009, although all I can find is a reference on Memory Alpha (which doesn't mention Pike) with a dead link.

I'm wondering if maybe he connected Pike in Trekmovie comments sections where he used to post regularly. Or maybe someone else made the connection and the idea stuck with me.

The comics had Gaila as someone who rejected Orion society so I wonder if that will continue on? I like the idea.

The perfect cover for a spy.

Perhaps Nu-Uhura busting in on Nu-Kirk & Gaila just happened to be another instance of that never-ending 'Kirk-Luck' that propelled him into the Captain's Chair.

Imagine a TOS version of "TAPESTRY" as it were, with Nu-Kirk being manipulated by an Orion Woman, missing the departure of the Enterprise and never ascending to a Ships Captaincy.

I think you got what I suggested backward. (though I like yer version)

In my thought experiment, "Q" would be showing him what would have happened if he HAD 'bang-a-ranged' Gaila.
How he'd be at her beck and call as he climbed through the ranks for the rest of his career.
Eventually still reaching Admiral, but doing it miserably from behind a desk and being an unwitting informant to the Orion Syndicate.
