This past weekend, I went to Moab,Utah to aid-station and pace my mom on her first 24 hour solo race attempt. Here's some pictures from the race and from our day exploring the Arches National Park.
Here is a picture that shows exactly how big one of the slick-rock area was. That is my mom in the middle, and we aren't even halfway down the rock yet!

This is a really neat picture I got of the Delicate Arch, unfortunately, the real camera ran out of film and I had to use my phone camera... didn't turn out as well as it could have.

I suppose I haven't been keeping you folks in the commie lounge very up to date recently, have I?You're going to have to explain 24 hour solo race to me. It sounds scary!

There is a series of races put on in this region that are the "24 hours series". They are trail or dirt road loops, and you have the options of doing the following races: solo 100 mile run, solo 24 hour run, solo 12 hour run, 2 person 24hr team, 3-5 person 24hr team, or a 6-10 person 24hr team. The past several years, I have put together a team for the 24 hours of Laramie race, and this year my mom decided she wanted to try and get 50miles before 50 years, and these 24hour races would be the way to do it since the "cutoff" time was so high. So, the basic concept for the solo event is you go out, do a loop, run back into the base camp, get resupplied, and get back out on the course.
Moab was a very pretty course, but it was very, very brutal for the bodies. It was about a half mile of dirt road, and then the rest of the loop was either slick-rock or incredibly fine sand. The laps I helped my mom, she was down to entirely walking, and even after just doing 3 laps, my feet were throbbing. We both blistered up pretty badly because it was impossible to keep the sand out of our shoes and socks.

Great picture. I wish I could have gotten up to D.C. while the blossoms were still at peak! I keep saying I'm going up, but never get around to it.
