Picard's Perfect Mate

Who is the perfect mate for Picard?

He had feelings for her but he felt guilty about falling in love with his best friend's wife. I think they were smart to keep them from actually pairing up and leave it at just friends.

From the title, I thought this would be about the episode "The Perfect Mate" where Kamala bonds with Picard. That episode tends to get negative reviews, but I really liked it.

Anyhow, I'm not sure how I feel about Picard and Beverly. I agree that they had good chemistry and a mutual attraction, but some relationships were not meant to gp further.

Picard is basically a loner and I don't really see him settling down with anyone. His interest in Beverly greatly stems from a long term friendship with her husband and a trauma which divided them. He does serve as a sort of father figure for Wes, but mentoring is common and he is a perfect example of someone able to fulfill that role without other strings attached. I liked their relationship as it was.

I don't think he should settle with anyone ... but I voted Guinan just to make the really bad pun that they have alot of "history" together .... :P

I tell you who it is not, Vash. I never cared for that two bit theif. I thought Picard had standards.

She made a good Maid Merrian, but not much else.

I picked Phillipa Louvois. I think they had a fiery relationship, and since both are career people, it would work as long as they only met once a year, on leave, kind of like in the Neil Simon comedy, "Same Time Next Year," only without adultery! -- RR

It's fairly obvious. Beverly. They had great chemistry and they had that longstanding friendship as a background. I particularly liked the part where they were infected with the Psi 2000 virus and Beverly was just about throwing herself at him.

I love The Perfect Mate and thought Kamala and Picard were a good match. I voted accordingly. The ending of this episode is so sad – it's a shame relationships like that weren't allowed to be permanent in 80s television.

I voted for Nella Darren. I also liked Picard with Captain Louvois, the fact that they wanted to kill each other not withstanding! I see that noone has voted for Vash yet, so I assume that Whoa Nellie hasn't found this thread yet.

That scene in the ready room was absolutely hilarious. Bev got some good grab on thins. :guffaw:

Yeah, I thought so, too.

 Hi! Real life has been a bit hectic. Add to that the announcement of the impending closure of geocities, I've been quite busy creating a new home for the entire Whoa Nellie collection of stories (around 100 stories) revamping and consolidating both Whoa Nellie websites into one. The new website url can be found on my fanfiction.net author page linked to in my profile.

I happen to agree with Patrick Stewart himself. In December of 1998, Patrick Stewart was quoted in the Calgary Sun as saying "I personally like to think Picard and Vash had a very active sex life. I can't believe Picard just read Shakespeare up there in his room all those years." Hands down it's Vash!

In canon, Vash was Picard's only reoccurring love interest. The character of Vash was designed specifically to be the perfect woman for Picard after Patrick Stewart's request for more "sex and shooting." Like Picard, Vash is an explorer with an expertise in archaeology. She is an adventurer, a female Indiana Jones. In the episodes where she appears, this beautiful brunette, with her beguiling smile and blue eyes, manages to charm not only the good captain of the Enterprise but the omnipotent Q as well. I'm constantly admiring writer Ira Steven Behr who created her for the series. Vash is Bacall to Picard's Bogart. Watch Bogart and Bacall in the classic movie "To Have and Have Not" and then watch "Captain's Holiday."

Actually there is canon that supports the notion that archaeologists behave the way Vash does. In canon, before meeting Picard on Risa she spent five years working as a personal assistant to Professor Samuel Estragon, an archaeologist who's work Picard knew. It was Professor Samuel Estragon who hired the Ferengi Sovak to aid in his explorations, especially in situations that weren't quite ethical. Moreover, Picard isn't surprised at all and is amused by the idea. (3rd season episode Captain Holiday.)

Also in the 6th season episode "The Chase," Picard's own mentor Professor Galen comes aboard the Enterprise wanting Picard for a handy bit of muscle. He even tries to bribe Picard with a gift of a rare antiquity, the Kurlan naiskos.

GALEN
"... I'm sorry, Mister Picard. But that information has a price --your agreement to join me on the final leg of this expedition."

PICARD
"For how long?"

GALEN
"Three months. Perhaps a year. If we had a starship and complete diplomatic access -- a matter of weeks. But we'll have only my shuttle, the transports we can arrange, and our combined talents."

PICARD
"Why can't you do this without me?"

GALEN
"I'm not a young man. There will be hazards along the way. I don't want my own inadequacies to jeopardize the completion of this work."

In this episode Professor Galen is operating exactly the way we were told that Professor Samuel Estragon did and the way Vash did. Therefore, it is a believable extrapolation from series canon that fieldwork in interstellar archaeology can be a somewhat rough and tumble, wild wild west like business.

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa Nellie

edited to add: A thank you to Vasquez Rocks for the perfect opportunity to post that picture again.:D

I'm quite torn between Vash and Beverly. My vote goes on Beverly because she and Picard never acted on their feelings. The actual pairing up only spoils good pairings imho - look at Mulder and Scully :scream:

I was always a fan of Phillipa Louvois. I loved the hint they gave in those early episodes that Picard was actually a complete lothario, shagging around the galaxy like Captain Kirk.

Oh, Phillipa, definitely - I agree with Tomalak, Red Ranger and (halfway ;) ) with WillsBabe.

There is such a thing as too much history, and I think that's what Beverly and Jean Luc have. And Vash, while I enjoy her as a character, is just too...conniving and unprincipled.

As for Nella...you know, I enjoy that episode but I found her soooooo annoying. Apparently Jean Luc didn't, but I just can't see it. Also...is it just me or does she look a bit too much like Beverly? Kind of weird.

But Phillipa is his equal in every way, and she seemed to see both his strengths and his flaws, which I don't think everybody does. What fun that would have been to see!

Vash seems the kind of person who would make a fun fling, but not really someone you could settle down with. She seems the type who follows her whims, not the kind of explorer who would spend her life on the same starship. And Picard wouldn't give up his ship to go traipsing around with her. So although they are a fun couple, I still don't see her as his "perfect mate".

:techman: I agree with you here completely. I love both characters, just not as a romantic pairing.

And Vash, while I enjoy her as a character, is just too...conniving and unprincipled.

See, it is exactly those characterizations and relationship dynamics between Picard and Vash I dearly love, like Han Solo to Princess Leia Organa or SG1's Vala Mal Doran to Dr. Daniel Jackson. Picard and Vash have a very compelling 'battle of wills' dynamic to their relationship. Vash's brazenness complements Picard's more sedate personality perfectly. She is the ideal foil for Picard's straight man.

Vash breaks into the captain's quarters. Does Picard call security? Does he have her thrown in the brig? No, the good captain beds her and makes her breakfast the next morning. This woman is just too cool!

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa Nellie
