Picard's a father

garoo1980

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Does anyone else think that Picard is too old to be a Dad now? It made total sense to me that Riker and Troi would have a child, but I thought that ship had sailed for Picard and Crusher. He must be 70 or something by the events in Destiny right?

People born in the 2220's are living to be at least 140 in the Trekverse. Picard could live for another century.

Thanks guys. I didn't really think about what a life span would be by the 24 century. I suppose having kids in your 40s would be unheard of a few centuries ago, its the same thing

I thought the fact that Admiral Leonard McCoy was still alive in A Singular Destiny was a bit of a stretch. Surely the man has one foot in the grave? Are humans getting Vulcan lifespans?

considering there's a bloke in real life in Britain who has become a father at 76, no i don't havev a problem with it.

I can buy Picard as a father but Crusher as a mother. In reality that woman would have no eggs left in her nest. :)

Modern IVF treatments have allowed women well beyond the 'accepted' child-bearing years have passed, including women old enough that several people question the sanity of for them desiring to give birth. If we can swing that now, surely it's not uncommon in the 24th century.

Wasn't STXI Jonathan Archer even older than TNG McCoy?

Based on a random unofficial online timeline I found I worked out Archer would be 158 in STXI, assuming he lived all the years inbetween and didn't have any help getting there from Daniels.

I recall Kirk wondering in Captain's Glory if McCoy's long lifespan was the result of exposure to some alien influence during the 5YM.

And Scott Bakula. He was talking about seeing that movie, and laughing at that line, and then stopping when he realized, "Hey, did they just make a joke about killing my dog?"

In fact, ST's estimates about future human longevity may be quite conservative. Humanity may achieve 200-year lifespans or longer well before the 24th century -- though, alas, probably not soon enough to benefit those reading this thread.

Besides, we all know McCoy's never going to let Spock get the last word. I figure he'll hang on out of sheer orneriness until sometime after Spock disappears in 2387.

As for Crusher's ability to bear children at age 56, the record age for a woman giving birth in real life is 70. The record for conceiving naturally, without in-vitro fertilization, is 59, though that may have been the result of hormone replacement therapy. So Beverly's about at the upper end of the bell curve for natural conception by present-day standards, making it plausible even before you take 24th-century medicine into account.

If I remember correctly Elias Vaughn is 101 when he joined the DS9 crew & President Bacco was about that same age when she was elected. If they are both healthy & remain healthy into their 120's why not.
