Picard Versus Janeway?

Captain Janeway once described Captain Picard as her "Comrade in Arms." And she was hot for Commander Riker, which is to be expected. So, I'm not at all confident that any kind a worthy competition could ever play out, betwixt the two. She's too much in awe of the leadership onboard Enterprise-D, herself. And this is no mere fantasy, on my part - no! Because it's canon - it's all there, onscreen. Every last bit of it ...

vs how? Starship fight? Picard is damned wily sometimes.

Kirk would play both like kittens.

Sisko and Archer don't even get past qualifiers.

Why compete?

Together they would be unstoppable.

Just like all 5 would be a force to behold. (John Barrowman is a hoot!)

I actually think Picard and Janeway would get along just fine. Maybe not romantically, but they would be fast friends. They seemed fairly at ease with one another in Nemesis.

But @2takesfrakes, what's this about Janeway having the hots for Riker? :wtf:

Exactly. Equal playing fields. Same "medium sized" starships. Identical crews, etc. My first citation for Janeway's having the edge, is her performance in VOY The Year of Hell

In what way, what are we comparing here, tactical prowess, how good a dimplomat they are?

Thanks! I forgot about Picard being a better diplomat, but yeah, in general, let's say they have identical, medium sized ships, same crews and they were to face off...best of 7... random episodes??

^^

And that's the reason as to why Mulgrew never wanted Janeway to have a relationship with Chakotay

As for "diplomatic skills",

Final scene.

[Transporter room]

JANEWAY: Gentlemen, it's been a privilege to have you as allies.
GALEN: I never believed we'd escape.
LOQUAR: Then why did you join?
GALEN: Captain Janeway is very persuasive. And the food was good.
JANEWAY: You're welcome to have a meal with us anytime.
GALEN: Ah. Unfortunately, we're headed in the opposite direction. Safe journey to you and your crew, Captain.
JANEWAY: And to all of yours as well.
LOQUAR: Thank you.
(They are beamed away.)
JANEWAY: It was almost like being part of a Federation again.
CHAKOTAY: The real one's only thirty thousand light years away.
JANEWAY: Then what are we standing around for?

^ I actually would have liked that as the final scene for the whole series. It ends on a happy, optimistic note. And it's not so contrived as Endgame was.

To the thread topic: My opinion is that Picard would match Janeway just by virtue of experience alone. He's been in command of starships for the entirety of Janeway's life -- exploring, fighting, making peace.

That's not to say I believe Janeway isn't talented, but -- assuming both captains have equal capabilities in terms of ship and crew -- I think there's little Janeway could throw at Picard that he hasn't handled before.

Janeway: I have a plan that will surprise the old man. Let's do the following steps. Set course and speed...
Picard: Huh. This looks familiar. ::snaps fingers:: Ah! The Gul Revel Pattern. I haven't seen this since the Cardassian Wars 25 years ago... What's the counter? Oh yeah...
Janeway: Damn. It's like fighting the Borg. How'd he deflect my clever new maneuver so easily? I have another idea! Lieutenant Redshirt, let's play with their sensors a bit...
Picard's Tactical: Captain, we've got two enemy hostiles closing in weapons range. They came out of nowhere!
Picard: ::Smiles nostalgically remembering Peak Performance:: Ahh, Mr. Worf... [To Tactical] Ignore them.
Janeway: Grrr! Doesn't anything work with this guy?
Picard: ::casually bites off a piece of apple::

Well, I'd say that Picard and Janeway are equal leaders when it concerns their ship & crew. Picard is known to be an accomplished diplomat even though Janeway is much more respected for her hands-on expertise. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying she isn't a diplomat (besides, I guess that diplomacy is a part of the education of every captain of Starfleet). But as we were often able to see it, when she considers it has gone on far too long, she can be surly (definitively not her best quality!).

It's a great pity that these 2 captains never worked together during a mission, from captain to captain to fight Borgs. With Seven of Nine in the area, it could have been interesting - en if a bit awkward at the beginning -. :)

I like Shikarnov's point about experience. I recently re-watched VOY "The Year of Hell". Help me remember specific episodes that Picard tops Janeway's performance as a captain in The Year of Hell.

The do work together, well at least there is some interaction, in my story "Strange Dreams". :techman:

As for the CaptainsI really like Picard. A role model. Probably the best Starfleet captain.

But there is something special with Our Favorite Captain Janeway, so she gets my vote!

This is like asking, tea versus coffee?

Jean-Luc was a tea drinker, and was raped by the Borg.

Cap'n Kathy "beat the Borg" with coffee.

Allegedly. ;)
