Fuck yes!

The new Picard-television series is going back to the classic Trek shooting location and will be filmed in California:

Now that's amazing news. As you maybe know, "Discovery" is shot in Canada, Vancouver & Toronto, like Stargate back in the day.

Now way is this such good news?
Well, first of all "alien planet Mojave desert" with it's famous Kirk's Rock is a much better alien planet than "planet Canadian forest". But also, that means we have two Trek shooting locations in vastly different geographic areas! That means they can share ressources and swap locations a lot cheaper and more easily!

They can fly the Discovery actors to Californa, and shoot on the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant , the traditional Starfleet Academy, with the team and crew from the Picard show, or fly Picard to Canada and have him stand in a lush, Canadian forest (instead of using the same Japanese Garden that's usually the "Star Trek forests"), or the Quarrie they filmed the MU planet in. All with already having a Trek filming crew on place.

All in all, that means if each show wants to have location shootings, they don't have to ferry their entire crew and equipment far away, they can now use the ones already there! Which is much, MUCH better for each show's budget!

I do severly hope that that means we will get to see way more outside location shootings, portraying different planets with vastly different climates and geography, and that those will be way more different between each other than ever before (when Trek was stuck at only one filming location)!

The only drawback might be that the writers of each show then don't have very regular, personal contact with each other, and that Kurtzman has to fly around a lot supervising both shows. But in the age of social media and the Internet, that should IMO work out fine.

Good, practical news everybody!

But that doesn't stop them integrating DSC into TNG mythology in the course of the series! :scream:

The current Star Trek stuff (including the Abrams films, which I love) is Star Trek in the same way a new Shelby Mustang is a Shelby. It has the corporate name, but none of the original folks involved. So I see it as derivative and its own thing, separate from the original creator works.

The Abrams stuff is set in a different reality as we have seen but DSC is in yet another timeline as of yet unrecognised by the money rich suits!

I wonder if this was a part of the overall package to get Sir Patrick to agree to star in the show?

Maybe... But doesn't he currently live in New York? He shot a lot of X-Men stuff in Canada, I don't see him having an aversion to the place like Schwarznegger does.

Discovery isn't filmed in Vancouver, only Toronto (plus Jordan for the desert sequences of "The Vulcan Hello"). They considered filming TNG in Vancouver early on, but (wisely) decided to keep it in LA. All the TV Stargate shows were filmed in Vancouver with the very occasional US location shoot later on.

That said, Discovery has been great so far at utilizing the boreal locations around Toronto to represent various NON-forestey locations. It only fails when you see the same locations in all the OTHER sci-fi shows also filmed around the GTA, like in Killjoys, The Expanse, etc..

Is Picard gonna make the Federation great again? Stop Romulan refugees from stealing Boothby's job?
I was going to make a joke about Picard prompting Earth to leave the Federation, but I remembered his character is French, not British.

Oh well ... it was funny for a second.

Maybe he'll be British now? Prior dialogue doesn't seem to mean a whole lot to the new PTB. ;)
