Picard Season 3 was awful. Change my mind.

Tempers have subsided, and we suddenly live in a world where there's not much of a chance of more TNG. Was it good? I think it was horrendous. Change my mind.

Not up to anyone else to change your mind, obviously.

And if it were, it wouldn't be me. I thought it was barely acceptable. While delivering a lot of good "fan service" it also goes way too far with a lot of it, well past the point of overkill. And if you strip most of that nostalgia varnish off, the woodwork underneath is pretty damn rough.

That said, it was still a hell of a lot better than season two. Yuck.

Given pretty much your entire history is complaining about this season, do you seriously expect anyone to think this is a genuine attempt at discussion rather than vapid attention-seeking?

I don't think it was that great, but it's better than a fair chunk of the rest of Trek - including much of TNG.

Picard s3 has this awful quasi-fascist undertone to the whole thing, like we’re unironically watching something from the Mirror Universe. Or if the show runners had watched Paul Verhoven’s Starship Troopers and watched it ‘straight’, oblivious to it being a satire of fascistic sci-fi. Picard s3 is just wretched; not an ounce of actual Trek or its hopeful message in it. It’s just dystopian sludge, and cements Officially Branded Trek as nothing more than a nostalgia franchise that reheats the past glories without any understanding of what made its own past glorious.

Shit. Now we're going to have to break into an actual discussion. But this time it's with someone who's actually serious, unlike the OP, so it makes a difference.

You've confused PIC Season 3 with "Penance": the second episode of the second season.

Wouldn't something being nothing like it was before make it the exact opposite of nostalgia?

As far as people endlessly complaining about nostalgia (in general), I have to ask them: Do you all have cutting-edge 2023 hairstyles, 2023 style clothing, have all the latest 2023 tech, and only listen to 2023 music? Do you live in a home and work in a building built in 2023? Life is not just the Present. It's the Past, Present, and Future. Including in a franchise that's close to 60 years old. What I like about PIC in general is that it doesn't look like everything is from 2401. It's a mix of things that have added up over time. It's more realistic that way.

And our enemies today are the same enemies we had decades ago. We still have to deal with the Russians, we still have to deal with Terrorists. Just like in Star Trek where they still have to deal with the Borg and they still have to deal with remnants of the Dominion who weren't happy with peace. These things don't just go away and disappear. Or, to quote Henry Francis from Mad Men, "There are no fresh starts! Lives carry on!" Fresh starts are a lie. Carrying on is the truth.

If the Federation had to deal with a new adversary in Picard, the first question that would be asked would be, "Where the Hell were they before?!" followed up by, "Where are they in The Future in Discovery and why haven't they been mentioned there?!"

Ok, in your opinion, what has been the best / "least worst" Star Trek to be produced since the end of ENT?

I think now that some time has passed, I can say in my opinion Picard season 3 as a whole is passable popcorn entertainment that does nothing new or interesting. (With the caveat that episodes 4 and 5 were pretty damned good.) Its a fun nostalgia trip but it’s not in my personal top Trek. Nor is it even close.

It was the single greatest piece of story telling since the Canterbury Tales. Change MY mind.

Don't bother responding to this clown.

Granted I'm rewarding him with attention just by posting, but he jumped into every single episode thread (just look at his post history) and endlessly harped on the same points and usually got things wrong meaning he didn't actually watch the episode, instead just got talking points from elsewhere. I had hoped that with Picard done he'd move on to other ventures, but apparently I was hoping for too much.

He's a troll, and not even a good one.
