Photon Torpedo Effect

Another thing just occurred to me.

What kind of photon torpedo effect will they be using?

I prefer the ST:TMP photon torpedo effect as they have a certain grandeur and threat to them,a sense of inevitability.

I don't really like the blob effects in TOS which was limited by money or the PUNY LOOKING 3 superimposed rotating set square triangles mess ejected photon torpedos in TNG and unfortunately subsequent series also resorted to the blob effect losing potency in the effect.

Any preferences by members here and why you prefer a particular effect.

I don't care what effect is used as long as the torpedoes don't emanate from the lower saucer sensor dome as in TOS.

Ya need to edit your question... I think you "typoed" it.

Now, here's what I personally want to see IF we see Photon Torpedoes fired from Starfleet vessels.

I want a small dark object, with a very bright engine flare, and a slight, luminescent "contrail" visible behind it for a short distance.

The "contrail" can look reminiscent of the TOS "blob" effect, but need not exactly duplicate it. And the bright engine flare can do what real bright lights do when shot through lenses with even the tiniest imperfections... ie, you can see little diffraction lines coming off the bright light source as it traverses along the lens.

In other words, treat the previously seen effects as SIMULATIONS of something REAL. And show us that REAL thing that, under certain circumstances, might have looked something like what we've seen previously.

I voted for YES & YES thank you very much :)
I actually want energy-bolt torpedo's and not like in TWOK.

I have no idea what they'll use, but I think the effect should be really subtle: Have a quick, bright flash at the launch tube port, and then almost instantly have the torpedo detonate at or near the target (depending on whether or not it hits its mark.) I think that photon torpedoes should travel at high warp speed, and that there should be no real glimpse of them in route to target.

TMP effect please. I quite liked it.

You also reminded me about the phaser effects also.

Should the phaser be like TWOK type?...you know like really thin cutting/lancing beams or big thick blue/red beams displaying great MAGNIFICENT power as in TOS.

I prefer the movie versions of the phasers and torpedos. The movie photons simply looked better and I liked the early pulse phasers.

I agree. I hope that's exactly what they do.

I liked the effect from TMP as well. I hope they keep basically to it, and beef up the explosion somewhat so that it looks like the awe-inspiring thermonuclear yield munition that it is.

Also: Lower saucer tubes, please, and show them.

Well, I largely agree... but the torpedo's maximum yield really would be much greater than a mere thermonuclear device would have for the same general size of warhead... antimatter annihilation is far more energetic than nuclear fusion, much less fission... but I'm sure you know that and were just speaking in broad strokes, right?

Correct. Wight-for-weight, antimatter is far more potent stuff than ultra-dense uranium or plutonium. I just meant that the yield of a photon torpedo at its maximum setting would be roughly on par with the largest thermonuclear warheads we've developed so far.

If I see a another photorp dissolve harmlessly against a ship's hull, I think I'm going to design and construct a REAL one and give the boys in the VFX department an up-close education in what one of those things can really do. Them and everyone else within a 100-mile radius.

I love the TMP torpedo effect, and I loved it coming back for Voyager, but I got to thinking: if Nemesis or any DS9 fleet battle had those torpedoes, the audience would all fall to epileptic seizures.

That, or those shots would only make for the BEST RAVE EVAR.

It never ceases to amaze me how people feel justified in coming up with a thread for every brain fart they have regarding this new movie.

TrekNerd: "I wonder if they will be using the new Paramount logo for the film?"

TrekNerd goes off to create his forty third thread that day, this one on,

"I wonder if they will be using the new Paramount logo for the film?"

It just astounds me is all.

^ I did a joke based upon that, due to everyone saying that the teaser was part of the actual film of course....

* Humor, it is a difficult concept *

TUC had the best torpedo effects, I think. You knew that when they hit the ship, stuff was gonna 'splode.
