Phelps caught smoking pot

Yeah, but isn't it also no leap at all to assume that he's an idiot, who if he doesn't care enough to not get caught on camera smoking a bong, that he probably wouldn't care about the off chance of getting caught by a test "doping" by smoking pot.

I mean the fact he allowed himself to be photographed is an indication that he just doesn't care about getting caught period, not that he specifically doesn't care about testing positive. And looking at that picture he fits the airhead stereotype perfectly.

Really, what an idiot for letting himself be photographed doing that.

He shouldn't apologise for it though, it's perfectly normal acceptable behaviour, and he should tell his detractors to stick it.

It may be common but its hardly "normal" and definitely not acceptable, even if he wasn't in a sport and a paid "role model". While I don't think he should be crucified the level of respect for him will go down in almost all quarters. That's what happens when you don't respect yourself.

Camera phones are ubiquitous, do you know every time someone takes a photo of you?

It's about time something came up to take that smug bastard down a peg. A double dumbass on him.

Smug? Really?

I've never seen him be smug or arrogant in any fashion.
He seems like a decent guy if a bit goofbally.

I actually used to be sympathetic towards him... then, I dunno, I think he tries to market himself a bit too much ('O-M-G, I had to overcome ADD as a kid...') plus something about him when he was on SNL really made me hate him.

And I think pot as a - oh, no, sorry, THE gateway drug is really, really debatable. I can't fathom why anyone with a lick of common sense would say 'Well, I've smoked pot, no harm in shootin up some heroin or snortin some coke now that I've jumped that hurdle...'

Well I'm sorry that's your impression of him. ADD is a big hurdle to overcome
so talking out about it is a good thing, especialy for those who have to deal
with it to be able to see someone who has won 8 Gold Medals has overcome it.

As for the pot... seriously, to assume he must do other things cause he smoked
a bong is ridiculous and utterly judgemental. I know and have known people
who have smoked pot and none of them would ever touch any harder substance.

It's no worse than smoking fucking tobacco, just another weed.
What he does in his off time is hs business, apologizing for it is also
his business, though he really had no need to whatsoever.

How many people have skyrocketed to fame only to end up on the coroner's table too soon.

Yes, history is full of rock stars and athletes who died of smoking marijuana.

Apparently the concept of "gateway drug" eludes your thinking.

I personally make a point of allowing fictional concepts based on government-funded, baseless fear mongering propaganda to "elude my thinking". I mean, here I am, after about 15 years of smoking pot, waiting for the day when I'm just suddenly compelled to go slam some heroin or smoke some crack. I mean c'mon! When is that gateway going to open for meeeee???

Ridiculous Regan-era bullshit, made up of whole cloth to justify prohibition of an essentially harmless substance. Fucking appalling that people still parrot that shit back.

I understand that, and I don't mean anything insulting to anyone with ADD - in fact completely the opposite - but the way he comes across when he talks about it has always come across as self-inflation and sympathy garnering, but I see your point as well, and if it does help kids feel better, then I'm all for it.

Exactly.

It isn't just the government who has studied the concept, as least in reference to the U.S. Other governments have studied it as well as independent researchers, universities, etc.

Regardless, I knowingly came across as flippant and for that I apologize (and no, I'm not a Republican. nor am I liberal; I'm essentially neutral in politics and thus have no "agenda").

I do think that in some ways, yes, marijuana can be a "gateway" drug, although I'm basing this off my education (which could have been influenced by outside biases). I can't say for everyone else that it leads them to try more dangeorus substances, but I'm sure the concept does exist in a limited scope.

I also don't think marijuana is completely harmless, but at the same time it is a person's choice, and that is not my place to tell them to conform to my way of life. Personally, I am firm in my stance to follow the law if at all possible.

I also will acknowledge also that it is hypocritical the government outlaws marijuana, but not tobacco use, then again, I try to take no part in politics so I'm not going to embark on a crusade to change this.

Personally, I feel Phelps made a poor choice in judgement, for a number of reasons. I still think he is an amazing athlete though.

Rice Krispies....with chocolate syrup. I can see him wolfing those down now on his next commercial, with that charming, cockamamie, chocolate covered smile, and milk dripping down his chin, talking with his mouth full: "deessh are dalissshous ss."

This doesn't bother me as much as the DUI. While I doubt it'll cost him any sponsorships or anything, it does make me think that he's not the brightest of guys.

Big fucking deal. It's pot. Marijuana, virtually harmless and not any worse than alcohol or tobacco. It's only illegal to suit political and commercial agendas.

If he did a line of coke, dropped acid, or did some meth, sure.

But pot?

BFD

South Carolina authorities are gonna book him

...Danno? ;)

You know, I used to be hardcore anti-pot. Now I figure it should be legalized. I am sure there are some health effects, but those can best be stopped by educating the public and offering treatment. Banning cigarettes obviously would not work, and I don't see how this is any different.

Besides, making pot illegal just makes it more appealing. It increases the excitement and danger associated with its use. Legalizing it could make it seem less 'fun' and therefore not worth it.

And I gotta quote George Carlin, about the main danger of legalizing pot: Nobody can remember where they left the petitions.
