Phase II Constitution Class

It really captures the feeling of Phase II. Though I think you might have the structural frame of the dock a bit oversized. It could be my eye that is off, however. :cardie:

Have you considered using the Phase II shuttlecraft?

Either this:

by Mike Minor, or

http://www.shipschematics.net/startrek/images/federation/shuttle_phase2.jpg

by Matt Jefferies?

Considering what you've been able to do so far with designs that admittedly have an unfinished feel to them, I'd love to see your take on the rest of it.

First of all: Thanks for the kind words!

Second:
@aridas sofia: Yeah, I got that feeling about the size, too. Since the dock itself is still a WIP, I will fix that (sometime). As for the shuttles: I'd love to do the Jefferies design, but that's way out of my league right now. But fortunatly I'm still young and able to learn. *g* The first one could be doable, although I think that would be the Phase II version of the travelpod...

I forgot to mention this, but your model in dry dock looks like it has "weight" to it. It looks a lot like a physical model. Am I the only one who thinks this?

It's a good thing. It means it looks "real" instead of just an image. At least, that's what it means to me, anyhow....

And I definitely agree, too. Very nice job! :thumbsup:

My only beef with the drydock you've worked up is that the structural tubing used seems excessively large. Each section of tubing is larger in diameter than a man is tall... looks like something like 10' a piece.

Generally, trusswork structures use a smaller aspect ration tubing diameter. If you were to reduce the tubing diameter to, oh, 2/3 to 1/2 of the diameter you currently have, I think it would "feel" more correct.

As always, it's your project, but that's what I'd do.

The scale to distance doesn't seem correct to me. That's probably not the author's fault though. The space dock would be 1/2 kilometer long, or so. The tubing on the end closest the camera would appear much larger than the tubing at the other end, which would be far enough away that it'd be string like in diameter. That's probably a software limitation not allowing for the proper DOF, I'm guessing though.

The modeling is all very well done though. :thumbsup:

The space dock is a dream realized!

My only criticism is with the excessive saturation of your lights.

Aren't the twin "radiator grille" marks on the front of the nacelle a feature of Richard Taylor's art deco refit nacelles only? They feel really out of place on this.

True, they weren't intended to be there, but I added them because the front of the nacelles looked to blank without them. The TOS-connie had her bussard collectors, the TMP had the grills,but the PII had nothing...it looked incomplete without them.

I understand...but they feel slapped on. I think they look better without them.

I know you weren't trying for a 100% accurate Phase II model, but it would be cool to see something closer to the model that was under construction, especially since there are photos of it under construction and some of those details were pretty solid. For instance, your impulse engine "throats" are much wider than those built for the abandoned minitaure, and the "skegs" on the bottom ends of the nacelles look closer to the refit than the on the miniature. Also, the "7" shaped insets along the side of each nacelle (ahead of the main grilles) weren't supposed to have the interior "corrigated" detail going all the way to the front of the indentation, as can be seen on both the miniature and the production blueprints.

Even if you don't change the mesh on any of these, it would be beat to see an alternate version minus the refit type details (like the black slots on the leading and trailing edges of the pylons, the TMP like plates running up the insides of those, etc.

Don't get me wrong; great work. Just soooo close and yet not quite. :)

@DS9Sega:
Since the model was still under construction when it was abbandoned, I think nobody can say for sure, if the one or the other detail I added might have or have not been on the model. I just tried to imagine what "I" would have done, if I had build that model back then. Without the inserts in front of the nacelle I realy got the feeling that something was missing. I saw those slots on some other non-canon blueprints for the Phase II connie and I thought it would be the best solution to add them.
And I'm well aware of the other "inconsistancies". Most of them were made out of artistic licence, or the lack of knowing it better. So the "just sooooo close and yet not quite" was intended. If anyone has a problem with that I realy don't care that much, everyone is free to have his opinion and free to do an own version of the ship.

@Cary L. Brown:
Hm, good points. I will take them under consideration.

@Relayer:
Hm, I didn't noticed that. A frew changes in the camera settings should do the trick.

@Dru:
The bright-light-thing is because of my lacking skills of working good with photoshop. But I'm planing on getting better at that! *g*

This is a great model. I love seeing this design realized in 3D finally. Keep up the fantastic work! And show us if you make any more renders of this model!

If I ever get the opportunity to model Federation X-technology ships for ADB, this is going to be my inspiration.

I just have to say, that when I first saw the refit design in TMP, I immediately missed the glowing domes on the saucer. I love that aspect of this design. Too bad they didn't opt to have the nacelle caps glow as well.

All right, it's been some time, but here's something new:

Lately I've been tight up with work, half of our staff is currently ill. So I've got to do much overtime at work, BUT yesterday I did a new shot with my connie, so enjoy (or not :p):

NBTrekie, that ship is absolutely gorgeous! Honestly, I think this ship just took over number 1 spot of my list of all time best looking Trek ships. It's has the gracefulness of the TOS E and the detail of the TMP E. This is the ship I wish would be in the new Trek movie.

Don't go selling yourself short saying you're not sure this mesh is good enough. Go ahead and give yourself a pat on the back....See, doesn't that feel better.... :)

Again, good work
