Petition: save StarTrek.com

mmm... Isn't it a little to early? I mean, we don't even have any details on what is going on.

I don't believe for a second that Paramount is going to give up the startrek.com domain name. It is much more likely that they will use startrek.com as the main publicity site for next year's Star Trek. In fact with the way the movie has been so secretive, I would not be surprised if some of the current staff are secretly rehired to revamp the site.

The only thing in doubt for me is whether the current site's content will be retained in some way. It is a huge treasure trove of valuable trek trivia and knowledge and it would be sad to see it lost forever.

^I bet there is a 35 year old trekkie somewhere living in his parents' basement who spends his time copying and paste every information from Startrek.com. Extra points if he already did it.

How sweet of Paramount to nix their jobs a few days before Yule. Warms the heart.
I'll bet the site content is safe. I just hope those folks got transferred or something, and aren't completely out of work.
Then again, sometimes these things are blessings in disguise.

(1) I own my own home. (2) I used a web-grabber to PDF the whole site in case it disappears. It's a background task to save the site for posterity. (3) It's still going since I started yesterday, and I have FIOS! (1305 pages so far) :p

Without the guy who lives in his parents' basement, isn't that pretty much what TrekCore is for (if not better than the offical site too, if I may say so)? ;)

God Bless You! :bolian: It won't be lost. Ain't technology grand?

I'll wager the people who have been maintaining this major -- and no doubt extremely busy -- web site for all those years won't have trouble getting jobs. We can hope they'll be better appreciated since this is at least the second time, IIRC, that startrek.com has appeared in some idiot's sights.

Actually this is great time of year to looking for new position. Many companies start new budgets/projects at the start of the year and are looking for new people right now.

I don't think there's any need to petition to save the site. I doubt the site itself is going anywhere. More likely, CBS Interactive felt they could more cost effectively manage the site by assigning it to another team they already have, rather than have a dedicated team for this one project.

At least we now know what KRAD does at the weekend ;)

Does anybody even use the website? I used it to go to the Star Trek Online board. But since the Koreans messed the game up I haven't be there.

The way I figure it, Viacom probably laid claim to the domain with the intent of giving it over to Paramount, to promote the new film.

While CBS and Paramount are both owned by Viacom, they are still two different companies, and there's absolutely no reason why CBS should continue to pay to employ people to run a website that now belongs to Paramount.

Of course, CBS still has a commercial interest in Trek, and has their own Trek related products to promote, so it's likely that they'll soon announce an entirely new website/domain for that purpose. And it's entirely possible that at that time, some or all of the existing team will be rehired to run it.

A friend of mine made a petition to save the official Star Trek site.
Perhaps if we're lucky someone will raise $36 million to fund another year of the site.

I don't know if i want to take any part in any kind of petitioning just yet, first I'd like to know what is happening to the site.

Hey, if I put together a petition to stop all the internet petitions, would y'all sign it?
