Peter S Beagle has announced live-action Last Unicorn movie

Admittedly there is a logical point in the book where it could be broken into two films, basically when the unicorn becomes human. However, it's not THAT long a book; so a single-volume adaptation still makes sense. I could see a two-hour film being made from the source material... The animated film was less than 90 minutes long and remarkably well scripted for what it covered.

What I mean by additional stuff are elements such as Hagsgate (the town above which Haggard's castle sits and where Lir came from) and its prophecy, the four men-at-arms (mentioned once in the film but not seen), and the various concepts of immortality explored in the book but not the film - the unicorn is immortal, but there was a whole character piece for Schmendrick on how he was older than he appeared, and ditto for Molly Grue's mortality and yearning for the young girl she was and sees in herself by traveling with the gang.

I only hope that whoever would step up to do this, would go for a fully CG unicorn and not a horse with a prop horn, as the aforementioned studio was gunning to do. One thing the film captured perfectly was the non-equine look of the unicorn, and doing something similar (would they even have the rights to the original character design?) would be absolutely required IMO. I don't see huge names attached to a script like this and won't bother speculating - but the book holds a special place in untold millions of people, and I'm sure many names in the biz will have read it and would love a chance to adapt it.

And no musical numbers, please.

But I loved Go Ask The Magpie...;)

Oh, the soundtrack and songs by America were fantastic. I was referring most specifically to the character pieces. Butterfly aside, the Amalthea/Lir "love song" was one of the very few things I did NOT like in the movie!

@Chemhakuu: *hoofbump*. Good stuff!

^Excuse my ignorance (it's been a while since I've seen the movie) but is Lir the blond prince that was voiced by Jeff Bridges?

Yup and do you think Lir is the world's first hardcore brony while Haggard was the first brony? i mean Haggard collected all the unicorns of the world and had an obsession. His son Lir is a hardcore brony as he scored with Lady Amalthea (lucky bastard he is) and still had romantic feelings for her as when she said "Lir i will not love you when i'm a unicorn" and he is like "I don't give a s hit". Hell i wouldn't mind dating Rarity or Celestia in either humanized or anthrofied forms if they you know existed,

Im sure all the bronies and pegasisters will flock to this movie in an instant. The original movie is a film every brony should see once in his life.

And who agrees 1982 was a great year for movies?

It's not something that crosses over much in the fandom, I know several of them have seen it, but this movie was out two years before MLP even existed, nevermind G4. So for a lot of them I think they associate it more with memories of G1.

I'm a bigger fan of Pegasi anyway, have been before MLP, so unicorns where never exactly a big draw for me. My parents had a porcelain unicorn years before I got my first Twilight.

I'd try for a piece of crossover art, if I had any artistic skills at all.

Anyway I look forward to more news on the project, if he pitches the idea to a studio in the next while.

UNICORNS!

Seriously, I'm fine with this idea. They're now showing The Last Unicorn on Netflix, and I plan on watching it this evening. A live action movie would be great, as long as it is given the proper care and treatment.

I love unicorns. Love them.

I only watched G1 because my sister was always watching it and buying the original toys. I remember those things *shudders* glad we have proper collectables now.

But I admit I would like to see more classical renditions of them, much as I do like our pudgy little multicoloured ones. The 2K print of the movie is only out in the US right now, and just released so got to wait a while for a UK release.

Meh, Pegasi are better. (Yes I realise the hyprocrisy of that statement, having a unicorn avatar, shoosh).
