Peter Capaldi Hints At 'Who' Departure

Perhaps to get ratings back, they will try to snag a relatively big-name actor for the companion???

It seems like a gyp because Capaldi made so much more noise about being a fan and wanting to break records and whatnot.

I feel like he needs at least 2 more seasons so, like others have said, he can work with a new companion and put his own stamp on it.

Yeah, it seems odd that Capaldi would want to leave now when he made such a big deal about it being his dream come true. If I were offered my dream job that I wanted since I was a kid, I would not quit after 3 years.

But who knows what is really happening behind the scenes. Maybe the demands of the job are too much for Capaldi? Maybe he is not happy with the direction of the show or the direction of his character? Maybe he wants to have more creative input? Maybe the story is wrong and Capaldi does not want to leave? Or maybe TPTB are worried about the ratings and are thinking of pushing Capaldi out to bring a new actor in, hoping that it will revitalize things?

Personally, I am really liking Capaldi. He is fast becoming one of my favorite Doctors. I hope he says 2-3 more years.

The guy is 57 years old. If Matt Smith says that shooting the show is exhausting (and he was what...31?) then you know it must be difficult for Capaldi. Plus, yeah, we don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Plus Moffat has been making rumblings about leaving. Plus Jenna left, and they had a close working relationship and lots of fun together (and he wanted her to stay).

It's probably any number of things, and the ratings decline too. Being a fan of something doesn't prepare you for the reality of it. It would be a shame if he did leave so soon, though, because he's really hit his stride and finally BECAME the Doctor to me this year. After a shaky Series 8 he's firing on all cylinders now.

If a new showrunner comes in, they might want a whole new clean slate.

Ask Val Kilmer about playing Batman. ;)

The simplest and most likely explanation, Capaldi was contracted to three seasons and doesn't feel inclined to renew that contract.

I swear there were rumors that he was only going to be on for a season, back in 2013. While I enjoy Capaldi, perhaps I'm a bit desensitized to the changing of the Doctor in that I'm not broken up about the thought of him leaving. It's what the Doctor actors do, after all.

Yeah, I also think there's some "hurry" to replace him since day one. Just let him prove himself.

So far, I agree with the sentiment that he hasn't really got his own era like the other Doctors did. He's the Sixth Doctor of the modern era, minus the cancellation fiasco.

Seriously, just let him stay until he's 60, at least. Let him shine outside of stupid Moffat.

Has season 10 actually been confirmed? I thought nothing was sure yet.

Sort of. Moffat has said there will be a full season of 12 episodes plus Christmas special in 2016, although how that will be done is anyone's guess. Filming likely won't start until June or July, and indeed they've only just started selecting writers for the new season.

They'd have announced the next companion (if there is one) soon depending on filming.

Isn't three years/series for a Doctor become semi-traditional?

Making Doctor Who requires a ridiculous commitment from the cast and crew. For the crew, particularly the art department, it's a nearly full-year job. For the cast, it can be upwards of eight months, and that's saying nothing of the physical effort required, nor the various ancillary materials and promotional work. To be on the show is essentially sacrificing the opportunity to do anything else. And you have to essentially live in, you know, Cardiff for that time.

Capaldi's a huge fan, for sure. But starring in Doctor Who is not exactly the easiest thing to do.

I think the anecdote is that Troughton told Davison to leave after three years, and Davison later regretted taking that advice.

IIRC, Kilmer was fired for being an asshole that no one wanted to work with again. Few directors do.

I would severely miss Capaldi. At least, right now I think I would. By the time Tennant and Smith reached their third years, I was ready for them to go. But right now, I love Capaldi so much!

Yeah, Val Kilmer in the mid-90's was a real piece of work with an ego the size of Jupiter. I watched a documentary on the disaster that was the making of "The Island of Dr. Moreau." The whole production was a mess, sure, but Kilmer was an asshole from day 1 that got on the nerves of both the film's directors, insisted that he do what he wanted and disregarded scene instructions, was called by the second director the worst actor he'd ever worked with, and was dismissive toward his co-stars.

And he tried to burn someone's earlobe with a cigarette or something.

Once you hear all that, you wonder how in the heck he successfully filmed anything that made him one of the biggest names 20 years ago.
