Peter Capaldi continues to show how awesome he is

I suppose maybe I'm on thin ice with my previous comments but I'm sure a woman Doctor could always find a good use for a sonic screwdriver.

You can how effective a female Doctor can be with The Sarah Jane Adventures, she was very much a prototype for such a change, she had a rotating list of companions and she saved the planet many times over, she even had her own version of the sonic screwdriver.

You mean the sonic lipstick? :roll eyes:

She might have well had a TARDIS that was a purse.

When they have a woman playing the Doctor, they had better keep the fucking screwdriver. Women can use tools as well, they don't have to just use sci fi make up equivalents.

I'd jsut as soon have the sonic screwdriver skip a regeneration, it's been well overused for a while now, it needs a rest.

I would agree. Or just not be a wand that can do everything.

I personally love the screwdriver. The Doctor without the screwdriver is like a jedi without a lightsaber.

As for a female Doctor...my feelings are mostly "meh". Just because its technically possible doesn't mean they have to/should do it. Also, just because one timelord switched genders doesn't mean its common. Would I automatically dismiss a female Doctor? Of course not, i'd give her the same chance i'd give any incarnation. Do I think its something they should do? No, not really. There is no real reason to make The Doctor a woman, outside of some kind of PC stupidity. I'm sure some female actors could play great time traveling timelords, but to me that doesn't justify rule 63ing The Doctor

I personally love the screwdriver. The Doctor without the screwdriver is like a jedi without a lightsaber.

And yet the first Doctor didn't have one and after The Visitation where it was destroyed Doctors five, six and seven did have one either. It's a handy gadget but mustn't be overused.

Why should they keep the Doctor a male, outside of some kind of traditional stupidity?

Why didn't JJ abrams make reboot Spock a woman? It could have been easily justifiable, even by the logic of the "parallel universe instead of full reboot" thing. Heck, they could have done it and kept Leonard Nimoy in it, since he was from another universe.

Why aren't the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles female in the new cartoon or Michael Bay movie? Both versions could have been changed.

Why is Captain America a man in the Marvel movies? They change stuff from the comics they don't need. Also, why aren't Iron Man, Hawkeye, Hulk, Star Lord, Rocket Racoon, Thanos, or Ronin female? From the other side of the comic world, why wasn't the last DC movie Woman of Steel? Why isn't a woman playing Bethany Wayne in the next DC movie, and why isn't the upcoming movie Superwoman v Batwoman?

By your logic, every character should be fluid, never sharing anything but the name from one version to the next. Screw 50 years of history, let's lop off these characters guy parts, because DIVERSITY! Also, f**k the people that liked the characters before, we need to fill our diversity quota or people will send angry emails at us :rolleyes:I could literally use examples like these last few for 99.999999999999999999999% of all fictional male characters.

Sure, The Doctor is more open to change than a lot of the characters I mentioned because of a big part of his character, but its the same idea. You can justify making any character anything you want, you just have to ignore the things that made the characters popular, and their entire history to do it.

I've never believed that it was overused. I just like it. Sure, the fifth Doctor got rid of it for awhile, but it really wasn't the same thing back then. Nowadays it is like his lightsaber, and it would really suck if it wasn't around on a regular basis.

You can justify making any character anything you want, you just have to ignore the things that made the characters popular, and their entire history to do it.

First of all, every one of those changes you ironically suggested would be perfectly fine. Why not? You think the Doctor was a popular character BECAUSE he was male? Nonsense. I would argue that his popularity had everything to do with the fact that he regenerates, that he's funny, that's he's smart, and that he gets to travel through space in a police box killing bad guys, and that it had NOTHING to do with his gender. Anyway, Starbuck from Battlestar became a woman, and the character was all the better for it. Make Spock a female character in the next iteration? Why not? Will the new series make the older series cease to exist? They've made all-black Hamlets, they've made King Lear a queen, they've done all sorts of things for the sake of creativity, novelty, and new avenues for storytelling. Why the hell not? If the next reboot of Star Trek made Kirk a female character, and it was written by the best screenwriter Hollywood had ever seen, and that new Star Trek movie was the best movie since The Godfather, who would give a crap that the character's gender had been changed? I mean, seriously? It's fiction. It's art. The sky's the limit. No new artwork ever makes previous artworks cease to exist. So, anything could be tried, absolutely anything.

Second, none of your examples are parallel. In Doctor Who, there is an IN-UNIVERSE REASON why such a sex-change would be possible. It's like complaining that the Trill Dax, from Deep Space Nine, couldn't be a man. Well, sure she could. Time Lords DO CHANGE SEX. It has been established by CANON. There is NO reason within the pre-established rules of the universe for the Doctor not to be a woman.

Whatever happened to character consistency? Why do established characters need to be screwed over? What happened to liking a character for what they are, not what the diversity police want them to be?

Just because it can happen, doesn't mean it should. I'm not debating that it is canon that it can happen. I'm not against the idea that a Timelord can change gender in general. For The Doctor, its stupid. If they want a new female character, make one. Don't screw over pre-established characters by basically removing their core aspects and just keeping the damn name (this goes for every character in every media, not just The Doctor or the Doctor Who franchise).

Therew is no reason the next Doctor can't be a guy. Not one reason, except that the PC police want a girl. Well, then go write a story about a timelady, and stay away from The Doctor. Same goes with everything. Make new diverse characters, don't screw over fans of established characters because you want to steal their name recognition. A gender is a pretty big change. No character is the same if they get rule 63'd, so the old characters should be left alone.

The Doctor is popular because of who he is. There is no reason to pull a 180 with the character, except for people who can't stand popular characters not getting screwed with because they don't meet the PC quota.

For all we know the Corsair was a bit peculiar and changing genders fit with his/her personality

That's fine. Like I said, I'm not against timelords changing gender in general, I'm against the Timelord we know as The Doctor randomly changing his gender.

I'm mostly concerned about the general creepiness in the press when its announced that the Doctor has had a sex change. I don't want to even think about the flood of hermaphroditic fanart.

Why not just do an alternate universe female Doctor story for one episode?

Why not he randomly changes everything else upon regeration height, weight, hair color, love of cats, cricket, jelly babies, playing spoons.

But somehow if a new Doctor starting smoking, drinking and having sex there'd be a much larger outcry then there would be for a simple sex change.

I'm sure fanart has already gone there

Why not just do an alternate universe female Doctor story for one episode?

Ask all the actresses out there who'd welcome the same chance to play the role as their male counterparts, and all the mothers out there who'd like their daughters to have a hero who represents them rather than just a sidekick. One episode is hardly enough, not for an institution spanning generations. And equality requires more than a token gesture from the entitled.

He could have. Moore changed Starbuck. What's your point?

Why aren't the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles female in the new cartoon or Michael Bay movie? Both versions could have been changed.

Yep. In between all of the explosions.

Why is Captain America a man in the Marvel movies?

Yeah, why not?

Though, an argument could be made that the Super Soldier was going to fight... and in the 1940s, women weren't allowed to fight. So... yeah, history.

Of course, if they were doing a reboot and Captain America was given his or her powers say now... sure, why not?

They change stuff from the comics they don't need. Also, why aren't Iron Man, Hawkeye, Hulk, Star Lord, Rocket Racoon, Thanos, or Ronin female?

Sigh. I have a feeling you just really really hate the idea of an shape shifting alien not always being male.

From the other side of the comic world, why wasn't the last DC movie Woman of Steel? Why isn't a woman playing Bethany Wayne in the next DC movie, and why isn't the upcoming movie Superwoman v Batwoman?

Your adorable when you throw a tantrum.

if it was Batwoman from the recent comics, bring it on.

By your logic, every character should be fluid, never sharing anything but the name from one version to the next.

Except you are forgetting, a Time Lord is literally a shape shifting alien.

And really, what did most of the Doctors share among them? A snazzy fashion sense?

Screw 50 years of history, let's lop off these characters guy parts, because DIVERSITY!

Ah. Now, I think we're getting to what's really bothering you about the idea of a woman playing the Doctor. Do you feel shut out because of diversity?

Suddenly you wouldn't like the character because it was played by a woman? Seriously?

What about Elba playing Heimdal? Hated him? If not, why not? Why would you hate a woman--and this little tantrum pretty much shows that you would hate a woman playing the Doctor, and not a black man playing an alien who is a Norse God?

Sure, The Doctor is more open to change than a lot of the characters I mentioned

More open than some fans, methinks...

Yeah, you wouldn't want a Doctor with out his "lightsaber." He would be a whole lot less popular it seems.

^ Professor Zoom's post shows why the BBS needs a 'like' button. Sometimes just going 'This' isn't enough.

But in the absence of a 'like' button: ^ This.

He could have. Moore changed Starbuck. What's your point?

My point is, people would have rightly freaked out. Some characters are meant to be guys. Not everyone can be rule 63'd successfully (in fact, i'd argue 99% can't be), no matter how much you want every character to be a woman, apparently. Why shouldn't people like the characters they're attached to? What is the point of people liking characters, if they just can get thrown away whenever someone decides they need more diversity?

In that case, there should be no franchises. Just random names that are attached to new characters whenever a company needs to satisfy a new demographic quota. The whole concept of a fictional character being anything more than a one shot would get thrown away, just so they can use the name for something completely different every time  By that logic, I can't wait to see Jason Statham as Dan, Prince of Themyscira in the next DC movie reboot, and Sigorney Weaver as Black Panther. If any character should be something different because character consistency is now evil and the only point of fictional characters is to reuse names, then its only fair that everyone can be anyone :vulcan:

Sigh. I have a feeling you just really really hate the idea of an shape shifting alien not always being male.

When they've been a male for 50/over 1100 years, then yes, I hate the idea :techman:

if it was Batwoman from the recent comics, bring it on.

DC Comics Batwoman was one of my favorite characters before DC fired the writers and said she was never allowed to get married. I stopped reading her book after that, but I've still liked the character since she appeared in the old 52 weekly series years ago. I'd personally love a movie with the character, but that is actually with her, and she's definitely not a female version of Bruce Wayne :vulcan:

Except you are forgetting, a Time Lord is literally a shape shifting alien.

And really, what did most of the Doctors share among them? A snazzy fashion sense?

There are differences between people and characters of different genders. People keep using The Corsair to justify a female Doctor, but that Timelord apparently switched genders between almost every regeneration, it seemed pretty fluid from what I read on the Doctor who wiki. The Doctor, on the other hand, has never shown the slightest hint that he'd ever regenerate into a woman. Since the character hasn't done it in over 1100 years and a whole set of regenerations, in universe you can probably say he's pretty well set on his gender.

Ah. Now, I think we're getting to what's really bothering you about the idea of a woman playing the Doctor. Do you feel shut out because of diversity?

No, I just hate diversity for its own sake. I get attached to characters, and I don't see why established characters need to be changed. When you do that, they are no longer the same characters. When I read a Superman comic, I want to read about Clark Kent. You're basically saying no one should like fictional characters, because the characters should never be the same, and what they are should be dictated by demographics, and screw anyone who is a fan of a fictional character.

Suddenly you wouldn't like the character because it was played by a woman? Seriously?

I specifically said I'd give a female Doctor a chance, but it wouldn't be the same character. It would basically be the end of the Doctor Who franchise that's been around for 50+ years. She wouldn't be the Doctor, even if she steals the name. Could it be good? Possibly, depending on who they cast. It wouldn't be Doctor Who, though. There is a reason that the only two times I know of it really being brought up was in a goofy (although entertaining) comedy sketch, and a horrible Audio story. Its just not Doctor Who. Hopefully, the people in charge will keep acting like TV people usually do, not willing to screw up their franchise by doing something so extreme and unneeded.

What about Elba playing Heimdal? Hated him? If not, why not? Why would you hate a woman--and this little tantrum pretty much shows that you would hate a woman playing the Doctor, and not a black man playing an alien who is a Norse God?

Oh, yes, because Elba played a female Heimdal....wait a second, I think that guy was a dude  Seriously, I don't know where this came from. I never said I wouldn't want the Doctor played by a black actor. It was fine with heimdall, although being an obscure, unestablished character probably helped. The comic Heimdall is cool, but not established enough for different casting to be a problem. If the Doctor can be a white british guy, he can be any other race (or nationality, I'd be fine with an american Doctor). The only thing I think needs to stay around between regenerations is his gender, besides that I'd say anything goes.

Now that doesn't go for every character, I'd put race with gender when it comes to what generally makes the core of a character, but The Doctor is an alien. His gender, like every single Timelord we've seen or heard of not named The Corsair, should stay consistent, but the race doesn't matter, and I'd say that even if River Song hadn't proven that a timelord's race can change by regeneration.

So, the Doctor is popular because he has a penis? Because he's been played by male actors? That's it? That's the big reason?

So the Doctor is hated because he has a penis? Or is it because british girls have no one to look up to, so they're currently rioting so that the character that's been male for 50 years should get gender swapped? Or is it just some PC police fans who somehow get all bent out of shape with keeping characters the same, because they don't get character consistency or the fact that people like characters the way they are?

What is so wrong with liking a character, and not wanting to see him change for absolutely no reason? What happened to being a fan of something? When I like a character, I like them for what they are, not what the PC police want to use their name for.

Why didn't JJ abrams make reboot Spock a woman? It could have been easily justifiable

Soft Reboot. Female Spock
