OK Here goes,

I have been a fan of sci fi all of my adult life. The new movie, I feel is quite simply amazing! My main sci fi passion has been Star Wars (please don't stop reading!) yet I feel that the new Star Trek movie has managed to achieve what George Lucas failed to achieve. A fresh approach to modern movie making, bringing Star Trek a new generation of,fans who would have no interest in ANY of the previous incarnations. In short and at last Star Trek is finally cool. The cast, artistic direction and dramatic premise are befitting of a 21st century movie.
I know that some fans of 'old school' Trek are beside themselves with horror at the artistic licence taken by the creative team, but when all said and done a fine movie has been made that will relaunch an otherwise stale and somewhat moribund franchise. In order for Star Trek to attract a NEW audience then the over obsessive nit-picking really needs to be stopped, I read on the forum tonight that some one was getting upset that a cast members hair was too curly. I cannot figure out how this kind of critisism is in any way relevant to the Re-boot. I feel that you should all be proud that a movie befitting the heritage of Star Trek has been made. Very much looking forward to a continuation of the new order. :techman:

Obsessive nitpicking is what Star Trek fans do and have done for years. I don't see that changing any time in the foreseeable future, but fortunately, new things arise from time to time to be ruthlessly nitpicked in turn. It is the way of things.

However, no one is compelled to pay any of it any mind unless inclined to do so. This, also, is the way of things.

The funny thing is, the new movie was reasonably careful about getting details right and rather than just upending thing carelessly and when the writers wanted to upend certain things (changing Kirk's character arc, revamping Uhura,), they actually made the effort to come up with a plausible rationale.

That's why I love this place. :rommie:

Lemme guess. Chekov? Yeah, his hair bugged me too. Just kidding. "Chekov's hair is too curly!!!" is my new catchphrase for fanboy over-the-top-ness.

Welcome to TrekBBS! Some will nitpick every little detail of anything. It is why they joined. If not the new movie, then something else... it is the way of life.

Most people are having fun with JJ Abrams' new movie (like me!!) and are not letting a few fanboys detract from that. I found a few things 'wrong' with the movie and I am a huge fan of it, too. Some have pointed out genuine flaws which makes for good discussion and debate.

Well Said

I think the new movie is absolutely superb why do people have to bash it say it is rubbish and not Star Trek it is.

When I pre-ordered the DVD I had to call Best Buy's support number to straighten out a mistake on the order. The girl on the phone asked me what I thought of the film compared to TOS. I told her "It depends how much of a purist you are. If you accept the premise of Trek in general, you'll love it. If you're the type that obsesses over the visual details, you're never going to like it."

You missed out on a poster here who proclaimed that the entire movie would be ruined for him if Gary Mitchell wasn't in it.

We know you think the movie is superb; you've said so over and over. However, not everyone has the same opinion you do--which really shouldn't come as a great surprise--and they are allowed to express those opinions here, too.

Why do you keep asking "Why?" of people who have already given their reasons for not liking the movie? Why do you keep asking "Why?" and not paying attention to the answers they do give you? Why do you keep asking "Why?" when I've asked you more than once to to back off on asking people "Why don't you like the movie?" all the time? Why do I have to keep pointing this out to you, and why is the forum still getting cluttered up with posts by you compulsively asking "Why" when you're clearly not the least bit interested in knowing the answers?

Please write yourself a note which reads "Stop asking 'why'!" and tape it to the corner of your monitor.

Do it now.
