Personal Style

Ok, I have had my personal style laughed at, mocked, scoffed at, and dismissed. My brother once termed it as "Pimpesque", A blending of classical, rustic, and pimp. :lol: Now I must say... I use that one. ;)

I tend to like things which are out of my price range, but hark back to days of your that if I could afford I would love to have. Things like bespoke three piece suits, dress shirts, and shoes. French cuffs with cuff links, a pocket square for the jacket. Silk ties. And a fedora to top it off.

I like Victorian building styles of dark woods, fire places, rich fabrics like silk and velvet and leather, but blended with a element of sleek modernism like metal and glass desks and entertainment units and a touch of nature in the form of plants and animal skins/mounts.

I like the idea of "dressing up". I prefer polo shits over tees. I like the idea of wearing a tie. I prefer clean shaven and groomed over scruff and disheveled.

Yet, when I was talking like this the other day at work, I got an odd look from one of my co workers who said that "you are not normal. No one thinks like that these days."

What say you. Do I have an abnormal personal style sense? What about your personal style choices?

My personal style is to be as plain, boring and unnoticeable as possible to the point where I have loads of identical tops, three identical pairs of jeans etc.

same here . . . I have at least 6 black polo shirts

Yeah, me too. I think getting noticed gets you killed or robbed.
Plus, I'm cheap. :p

I don't even like multi-colored athletic shoes, and rarely wear t-shirts with anything printed on them.

I hate polo shirts. Not big on henley's either.

Sir, that language is uncalled for.

No, actually, I know just what you mean about liking the idea of wearing a tie, but I can't bring myself to deal with the reality of it.

Let's see, my own tastes run to:

* T-shirts and trainers are for the gym or a day at the beach.

* I like cufflinks, so virtually all of my shirts require cufflinks

* No jewellery

* suits

* decent haircut - I never understand why men will buy a nice suit and then get a £5 haircut that looks like their mum did it. If you have a grade 1 sure but otherwise... no.

The main thing is I think your fashion has to age with you, there is nothing more desperate looking than a 30 something man trying to keep up with the most recent trends.

There are really two things going on here. One, you have a sense of style, which most people don't. Secondly, you make an effort, which most people don't understand. Bravo to you sir. You stand out from the crowd.

For me, I've been on something of a powder blue kick lately. Whether it be a dress shirt, a pullover, a sweater, and undershirt, I'm almost always wearing powder blue on me, somewhere. Given that my palette otherwise is simply black, white, and grey, it stands out. People notice me. It's not something everyone does.

You're not so unusual. A good number of people enjoy the art of fashion -- and it is most certainly an art.

My own personal style emphasizes classic silhouettes; I have an hourglass figure which pretty much requires me to do so. I prefer to by quality pieces that will last and remain in style, and I love dressing up. I accent my basic wardrobe with funky pieces and unique hats (a few of them custom made): A basic grey suit becomes a thing of beauty if it's well-fitted and paired with a good haircut, stylish Kelly green pumps, and a matching bag, for example.

You sound like an aesthete. You enjoy beauty of form, shape, colour, texture and a strong sense of drama and a pleasure taken from the appearance of decadence. I flatter myself that I also fall into this camp.

Well, he's almost right. Few people do. But then again, most people live their lives in a very circumscribed & limited manner. I'm not saying you need to dress up not to lead a closed life; but rather that your particular ability to derive joy from the fun of dressing up is but one example of taking a small pleasure in life that others will miss.

Lately I've been sporting a van dyke and slightly uneven sideburns, sort of a "muahahaha" look. It scares away the friendlies. :borg:

<-- Not particularly social

Oh, I'm rather unfashionable myself. I know nothing of raw-indigo jeans with premium accented selvage stitching and what not...

Holdfast, I don't care if past "what I wore today" threads were full of "jeans and tshirt" postings like you said... I think a 2009 thread would be different! :techman:

Edit: TSQ!!!! Kelly green is the BEST kind of green!

I'd define myself as a mix of classic/sporty. When I dress up I lean toward classic for reasons similar to tsq; otherwise I love to be outside moving so it's a lot of pilates pants, hoodies, etc.

Your co-worker is full of BS, or is a moron. There is a huge variety of what people like or dislike in clothes and home deco. Just watch HGTV or This Old House type shows, and you will see a fair amount of people who like houses the way you do. As for dressing up, there are countless of fashion styles. Nobody dresses the same. There is no "majority", unless you count blue jeans these days.

My style-fu is weak in general, having been brought up on Alan Partridge "sports casual" and trying to break through to the nondescript "street" trends with mixed results. I suspect if I ever meet Gok Wan, he'd give me a damn good thrashing.

My style-fu used to consist of Chuck Taylors, jeans and a t-shirt. I also had a nice suit/tie/shoes for the right occasions. Of course, now that everyone here on the West Coast does that, I've been switching it up. Now I wear cowboy boots/flannel shirt/jeans/ and a leather jacket.

You are not alone, though DH. I would love to have a Holdfast-esque collection of suits.

Love the style you're talking about here.

I like dressing up, too, but most of the things I want to wear are far beyond my price range. I have always wanted to wear a black double breasted silver pinstriped suit, just to see how it would look and what it would feel like.
