Personal cloud to replace PC by 2014??

When it's all in the cloud... they can see, control, and remove all of it as they see fit.

No, actually, they can't.

Actually, it depends on who "they" are. If "they" are the system admins of the cloud, then yes, actually, they can. If they can't, how could they possible render any assistance on a VM if something goes down? Then, you have to trust those people and hope that they are not being paid by someone to access your data on the down low, or accidentally leave a laptop lying around with all the admin-level passwords that somehow gets stolen. And if you think that doesn't ever happen, then you haven't been paying attention, and I have a bridge in Nebraska I can sell you.

And of course we also have lovely groups like the MPAA and RIAA who would be quite happy to grease palms in Washington to get various laws passed requiring providers to dig through our data in search of copyright violations. Or worse. The FBI or Homeland Security searching for incriminating data in the name of national security.

I'm not the tinfoil hat type, but you have to admit, these groups have been pushing their weight around in recent years.

^^^ Absolutely - ever since DHS had somehow become the catspaw of RIAA and MPAA, shutting down pirate sites, or any site that they judge in violation of copyright laws for that matter (without due process, BTW), they've become the quintessential poster children of corporate manipulation of a government entity.

Re: tinfoil hats - I bristle when people tell me that I'm being paranoid when I say such things, in an ignorantly haughty and dismissive manner, like they have some magic shield protecting them from the evils of the world, being generated by stating the few empty words, "Oh, you worry too much - that will NEVER happen". I've generally found that those who judge me and other like-minded thinkers either haven't experienced their own terror of identity theft (I have) or are living in this fantasy world of complete denial, firmly believing that our democratically elected "leaders" and polished PR corporate representatives are acting in the purist altruistic benefit for us all. Let them believe that nothing bad can happen. It will be that much more entertaining when they lose everything due to lack of personal security and good common sense. Let them cry "How could this happen? Why did this happen to ME? Why didn't anyone tell me about this?"

Wake up, sheep. The clock's ticking...

Actually, worse than sheep... Lemmings!

So what is the update now that it's 2015? I thought it instructive to check so of the claims in the articles I've posted.

In February 2014, RightScale conducted its third annual State of the Cloud Survey, asking 1,068 technical professionals across a broad cross-section of organizations about their adoption of cloud computing. Twenty-four percent of respondents came from larger enterprises, representing organizations with more than 1,000 employees. This year’s survey on cloud computing trends found that public cloud adoption is nearing 90 percent on the journey to hybrid cloud as enterprises seek to expand their portfolio of cloud services.

Personal cloud:

and the data:

Consumer Cloud Storage
● By 2018, 53 percent (2 billion) of the consumer Internet population will use personal cloud storage, up from 38 percent (922 million users) in 2013.

● Global cloud IP traffic will account for more than three-fourths (76 percent) of total data center traffic by 2018.

● By 2018, more than three quarters (78 percent) of workloads will be processed by cloud data centers; 22percent will be processed by traditional data centers.

● Overall data center workloads will nearly double (1.9-fold) from 2013 to 2018; however, cloud workloads will nearly triple (2.9-fold) over the same period.

● The workload density (that is, workloads per physical server) for cloud data centers was 5.2 in 2013 and will grow to 7.5 by 2018. Comparatively, for traditional data centers, workload density was 2.2 in 2013 and will grow to 2.5 by 2018.

Conclusion: 2014 was a bit early to replace traditional storage, but the writing is on the wall, with 3/4th of all data traffic being cloud based in 3 years.

RAMA

Yep. Bumping a 2 1/2 year old thread is dodgy to begin with, but when the bump post doesn't match up with the original OP it's game over. If you wish to discuss this per the new information start a new thread. Thread closed.
