Pern

Pern is one of the few fictional universes that my heart longs for. Every six months or so, I get homesick for Pern and have to go find one of the novels (at least!) and re-read it.

In my teenagery, my Pernese alter-ego was Fascyn, rider of gold Karamynth. She had a fair of fire lizards too - Glisten was the gold one, and I can't remember the other ones' names. It was like I wanted to be both Lessa and Menolly all at once. :D And Fascyn was a Telgar weyrwoman, in honor of Sallah from Dragonsdawn.

I really wanted to name my dog Menolly, but none of my family could pronounce it. ;) I still have this secret wish to name one of my children either Menolly or Robinton. :)

One dragon? I want a whole herd! Namely,

Cosmo
Dragon-Wagon
Blitzen
Floyd
Buttercup
Psycho
Dragon-My-Tail
Daphne
The Sisko
That would be F'Cyn, Gold Rider
I care not for gender distinctions, but you are right--
Girls get to keep their name
Imagine that

Female riders - especially queen riders - do not use the honorific contractions. Fascyn would be Fascyn regardless of whether she had Karamynth by her side or not. :) I believe green riders get to choose, but I'm not sure. I never went much further than All the Weyrs of Pern in my reading, so at the time, Mirrim was the only female green rider, and she didn't contract her name. None of the queen riders ever contracted their names.

Once Robinton died, it was kind of like the life drained out of the series. I've read a few of the following books, but I couldn't tell you from memory which ones.

Some past aquaintances of mine named their daughter Menolly. They pronounced it "Meh-NOL-lee".
I pronounced it that way too until I started listening to the audiobooks. When I realized it was essentially "Melanie" with the "l" and "n" transposed - "Menalie" - it made it a lot easier for me to remember. :D

I just started reading these books last year. I've read about four of them so far.

My Dragon's name, of course, would be "Puff."

I read the originals and the Dragonsong books in hs and college long ago, never read any further or reread them despite loving them then... I'll have to move them up the rereading queue.
