In the Discontinuity Guide Mel was described as a character made up of 100% cardboard. I think that's an insult to cardboard personally.

I've only seen Mel properly in The Trial of a Time Lord. Apart from getting a little chuckle from the scene in Terror of the Vervoids where she's making Six to some exercise in the TARDIS, her character just didn't do anything for me.

I voted for Peri too, but to be honest think she was better written. Mel seemed to be "hey we got Bonnie Langford, how can we write her character?" rather than "Hey we got this character called Mel, who can we get to play her?"

^That's essentially it. The script editor at the time she was cast claims that one day producer John Nathan Turner announced that the next companion should have red hair. When asked why he said "I just think she should have red hair. And I know one actress with beautiful red hair, Bonnie Langford."
And that was that.
