perfect casting

One thing I admire about star trek is the great casting, here are some of my opinons.

William campbell as general trelane(retired) hes perfect playing a confident adult at times and an impatient child at others.
caruso/tayback are perfect as the mob heads in this pretty silly episode.

james daly is great as flint , when he speaks you really believe he has actually lived that long and has seen that much.

john colicos as kor is perfect, everything about him, the way he talks, walks and behaves just seethes with power.
william windom as decker is great its a shame he hated his role,but his plays the mentally exhausted decker perfectly.

Nope.

- He observed the cast often didn't get along on the set - and there was some noticeable acrimony at times.

- BOTH Nimoy and Shatner were 'counting lines' in discussions with the Director (IE this was at a time when Nimoy - due to fan letter response - thought HE was the real 'Star' of the series and not the lead Shatner; so both were contentious about how many lines the other guy had in the episode.)

- He thought the shots where they just had him sitting in the chair doing 'crazy' facial reactions on camera (to be used as Deker's shuttle approached the Doomsday Machine) were just plain ridiculous to do; and he didn't think they worked well; but he did what the Director called for.

Mark Lenard as Sarek was pretty on the spot, IMO. Probably the best performance/portrayal of a full-Vulcan we see in Trek.

I get that Nimoy was the breakout star of the series, but you'd think that the facts that Shatner was listed first in the credits and playing the Captain of the ship might have given him a clue.

Supposedly when Fonzie became the surprise breakout character on Happy Days, ABC execs wanted to change the name of the show to Fonzie's Happy Days and give Henry Winkler star billing over Ron Howard. Winkler, to his credit, refused. Classy guy.

I don't know where you're coming from with Scott Bakula, though.

The various gentlemen who were cast in "The Return of the Archons" were absolutely perfect -- especially Harry Townes (Reger) and Torin Thatcher (Marplon). Underrated episode, BTW.

Agreed entirely! They were fantastic. And yes, that's almost in my Top 10. Very underrated.

Exactly, JB! Not sure that concept was original to TOS, although maybe it was. But the Purge (now a TV series that has, I believe, generated some acclaim) definitely owes a debt to ROA!
