Percy Jackson And The Olympians Sequel will be made

Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief was released last year and did so well that Fox has optioned for a sequel staring Logan Lerman again as the title character. According to The LA Times director Chris Columbus will only have a producing role in the film and will hand over director responsibilities to Thor Freudenthal.

According to a source familiar with the production who asked not to be identified because of the sensitive nature of discussions, studio Fox 2000 has exercised the option on star Logan Lerman, essentially meaning that the young actor is locked down to reprise his role as Percy Jackson in a new picture. The company has also hired a director in Thor Freudenthal, best known for helming the similarly boy-oriented "Diary of a Wimpy Kid;" he'll pick up where "Lightning Thief" director Chris Columbus left off. (Columbus will only produce this new movie.)

I thought the first movie was okay, looking forward to seeing the sequel. Glad they are going to get a new director, never been much of a fan of Columbus.

Hopefully they'll pull a Twilight/Harry Potter and get a new director for each movie if they are going to make the rest of the series. I always thought that was a neat idea, getting to see how different directors do a book from the same series.

Will Sean Bean be in it? :) Really, I liked all the adults in this film and none of the kids. I would much rather have seen these contemporary cool gods who happen to have half human kids in trouble rather than the whole 10 minutes of time for Kevin McKidd, too. I know that isn't how the books are obviously, but really, t-shirts for this are still sitting in the back of my local Hot Topic for $5 and no one is biting.

Yes maybe a new director will get the balance right this time. The first one was definitely no Potter and shouldn't have tried to emulate- especially if you are starting out with teenagers you can't really do all the magical awe of Sorcerer's Stone.

Well, until Harry Potter decided to reuse the same director for the last four movies. :p

My point still stands. The people behind Potter changed directors a bunch of times. Yates did the last couple, but it is no way his series.

To this day, I still think Alfonso Cuarón did the best Potter movie.

From what I understand, they pretty much cut out all the stuff from the first movie that set up the series' ongoing plot, so I guess there'll have to be some retrofitting there.

I thought it was a decent enough movie, but it could have benefited from a director with a little more flash. Columbus' style is pretty bland and generic.

That was my thought, too. Three years passed between the time I read the book and saw the movie, but my daughter and son read all of the books this year and we bought the movie. I was surprised upon skimming the book again, how much was left out and/or changed.

Dionysus was left out, as was Clarisse, but both have larger roles to play later in the series. Clarisse wouldn't be difficult to add in, but "Mr. D.," might be a little tougher. Especially because he's replaced by Tantalus in the second book. Technically, they could do without him, but, since he's a god, it would make more sense to keep him.

I also don't remember the movie mentioning anything about Grover's search for Pan, which becomes a major point later on.

Oh, and there's no mention of Kronus, the Voldemort of the series in the movie, but they set him up in the book.

There's also the fact that in the book, Percy fought Ares, which is mentioned several times in the series, but was not seen in the movie.

The first one was pretty decent. I'm interested to see what a more visually interesting director can do with the material.

And we still haven't gotten the (filmed) original ending to The Golden Compass. Sigh.

Compared to the Percy Jackson & The Olympians book series, the film was just terrible.
I read the series and thought them great fun for what was billed as a young adult series. I mean, if they're just going to continue cutting out all the structure of the story in an effort to put the most visually impressive moments 'on-screen', there's no reason to continue this series in film at all other than a cash grab, and even modern audiences won't fall for that if there's no story past a certain point.

It's kinda sad actually, especially since the new sequel series The Heroes of Olympus
just began with The Lost Hero and is off to another good start. The twist of the new series was both simple and yet full of room to explore.

If you're a fan of the original Pentalogy, be sure to pick it up.

i am sorry if I am wrong but are we talking about a sequal to the sorcorerer apprentice? and if so I really liked that movie and excited about a sequal to it.

Nope, it is a sequel to Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief.

Technobuilder, have you read the Kane Chronicles series?

The more important question is: will there be a sequel to Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins?

No, I haven't. I didn't realize that they were in the same Universe.

Thanks for bringing them to my attention. Are they any good? What's the explanation for them being in the same world, but "separate" as you say?

The author has indicated that they coexist in the same universe, only dealing with Egyptian gods instead of Greek/Roman, there are some small, really minor, references to the Percy Jackson series, but no crossovers.

Riordan has indicated that for now he will keep them separate. They are pretty similar to the other books, but with a different spin on how gods and mortal relate to each other.

... for now I think it’s best to keep the worlds separate to avoid utter confusion. Again, so many ideas, but each one takes a long time to write!

I've only read the first one (I wasn't aware that the second one had come out, but I'll definitely get around to that at some point), but I thought it was pretty good. Has a lot of the same hallmarks as the Percy Jackson books (though I'm not nearly as familiar with Egyptian mythology as I am with Greek, so I don't enjoy them quite as much on that level); also notable for having two black (well, mixed-race) leads.
