Per Varioety Article: ST: D Season 2 begins filming in April 2018

Just saw this from Variety:

The last paragraph of the article reads:
Kurtzman confirmed that Russo, who scored all of the first season, will be back on musical chores for the second season of “Star Trek: Discovery,” which begins shooting in April.

So yeah, depending on how may episodes CBSAA/Netflix wants 'in the can' prior to launching ST: D Season 2 - we're probably looking late (Oct - Dec) 2018; or early 2019 (Jan.) for Season 2.

No way it'll happen this year. I would think around March 2019. Hell, with productoin delays as happens sometimes, summer 2019 isn't out of the realm of possiblity.

When the subscription cancellations start stacking, CBS will get learn how many people subscribes for NCIS reruns. They might want some related product out there.
 
The Good Wife is the next big thing to return on CBS All Access though that's only 10 episodes starting in March I believe. I don't expect season 2 of Discovery until early 2019, though it could make a late 2018 slot if the season is split into two halves.
 
Well, good news is they've got two already-built complete copies of the TOS Enterprise sets (Phase II and STC) to update and play around with. Will likely need more than a new coat of paint, but at least half of the construction work will be done for them if they want to go that route.
 
Alex Kurtzman said in an interview that (if) they make the interior, they will keep it faithful to the original while updating it to match what we’ve seen in the show already.
 
If they're only two months out from filming, it's quite likely they've cast the new captain already.
 
It wouldn't surprise me if they started the season earlier than 2019. Publicity wise It would be smart to avoid going against the final season of GoT.

Considering a lot of Trekkies are about to cancel CBS All Access, I'm sure they're going to want to get back that revenue stream ASAP.
 
I think the first part of season 2 will start airing in November this year.

2019/2020 might see the release of another Star Trek TV series to run whilst Discovery is off the air...
