People who saw wrath of khan in 1982

I was wondering what did people think of the start of the film when you see the crew being killed one by one.
Did people know what was happening was a test or did people think this was going to be a very short film.

I can't remember what I was thinking, to be truthful. But I do know that I knew I was going to love it, and all these years later, I still do.

I was busy putting my noodle up through a hole in the popcorn bucket, so I didn't catch much of the first few minutes.

Joe, with butter

I saw it pretty late - after VI was on HBO. Wasn't fooled by the opening, I think I'd already read something about the Kobayashi Maru by then in some book or other. So yes, Spock's death did surprise me.

Being 16 at the time, I quickly smelled a red herring. As someone else mentioned, it was quite obvious they were not going to kill off most of the crew in the first few minutes. That said, it still is a shock to watch the first time.

I saw it for the first time on TV when I was about 4 or 5. But I don't think that I really understood what was going on then, anyway. I just saw most of the crew dying and then they weren't dead and I was happy to watch the rest of the film and I was crying so hard when Spock died in the end.
