People still say Star "Trak"

An early sf fanzine I used to read had a short piece on the 1966 Cleveland convention, and reported they'd seen a preview of Stark Trek.

I had to wonder what that was about.

In Billy Joel's song "Don't Ask Me Why", there's a point where you can hear his New York accent slip through...he says "Don't ax me why".

The "Valley" dialect (a.k.a. the lazy youth dialect) also makes "trek" sound like "track". People actually believe they're saying "trek".

My sister bugged me every time she pronounced robot "roh-BUT". I don't recall if she ever said "track" instead of "Trek".

You used to hear "Zulu" a lot too.

Although one of my all time most hated pet peeves are ACTUAL ST FANS who write "Chekhov".

That one just pinhces my tits.

I'm likely to do that, but that's because when I hear "Chekov" I think of Anton Chekhov first because, obviously, they sound the same. Not because I don't know that it's 'Pavel Chekov'.

It wouldn't surprise me that it was Roddenberry who initially spelled it incorrectly. :)

It called a souther accent. I do the same thing. Also, i tend to call all sodas "Coke".

Please get the stick out of your ass.
I'm in North Carolina where they call them sodas. In the Mid-West, where I grew up, it was called pop. Coke and Pepsi are brand names, with Pepsi being "The Taste Born in the Carolinas". (New Bern, North Carolina actually.) Sundrop and Cheerwine were also invented here where I live. :techman:
Also the word would be southern when spelled correctly. Not all southerners are idiots, they just talk funny. :guffaw:

As long as we're on the subject of mispronunciations.

My father drives me up the wall when he pronounces the short form of the food "bratwurst" as "brock." When it's BRAT!

We don't talk funny, y'all talk funny. ;)

"Mom, how many times do I have to explain it? Track is what a train goes on. Trek is what the Enterprise goes on."
