Penny Dreadful - SPOILERS

Man John Logan really has a thing about Day of the Dead doesn't he?

I loved the original show so I'm very interested, but it will be strange without Green, Dalton et al. I guess some characters could still be around, but given the original features a plethora of gothic literary characters what would be the equivalent for 1930s' America? Or will he jettison the use of existing characters for all new ones?

I guess it depends on whether they call this a sequel or have it a different critter altogether like True Dtective where the series are not connected so far as I understand. I am fine with going with a new mythology which I suspect this series will go for since they are particularly touting the Mexican-American folklore that will come into play in this?

Invisible man comes to mind. Probably some version of the Mummy (which was almost ready to show up in the original show, anyway). Changeling/doppelganger, perhaps?

The best answers for the era would really be the Universal monsters, but how to do those without running into rights issues is problematic. Also, if this is intended to be in continuity with the first show, vampires and werewolves have already been established with a more 'modern' aesthetic than what would be approriate to a 30s period piece.

They could go with cinematic stuff but there are quite a lot of good ghoulish creatures from the pulp authors of the era like Lovecraft, August Derleth, Clark Ashton Smith, Leigh Brackett, and delving heavily into Mexican folklore would bring a host of critters not used in anglophone writing and film.

They could always bring them back as either totally new characters if this is a totally separate thing, or as their characters' descendants if this is in the same universe.
