PC Mag's 2007: The Miserable Year in Review

Here's a bit of fun and snickering from pcmag.com, including a link to its most popular column The Vista Death Watch:

(Whenever I post links here with Vista, the TrekBBS Instant UBB code is disabled, even though it worked fine with my now-dead XP box.)

That might just be a browser issue. I'm running Vista Ultimate (with RC1 patch) and everything links like it should here.

There's a bit in there about the etymology of "w00t". It seems some people have retrofitted a history onto it that indicate it's a contraction of "wow, loot!" Right. As far as I remember, when I started seeing it around 1998 or so, it was specifically a modification of the expression, "woo!" It's just fun to put "t"'s on words (or non-words) that didn't have them before, you know. :)

I never did know what "Intel Viiv" was supposed to be, either.

^ Intel's attempt to diversify beyond 'merely' making PC components.

Not sure why they abandoned it. Not sure why they sold off their XScale processors either.

They what?!

Seems they don't care very much about the mobile phone/PDA market, then. Weird. I didn't know they sold off XScale.

It's Home Premium (Japanese version). The same machine with Ultimate was 10,000 yen more, and with XP 20,000 yen more. They don't come with an English-language version where I live. If they did, workarounds would be easier for me. But I also need the Japanese functions, anyway. There are a lot of little things this version of Vista won't do that we take for granted with previous versions of Windows. I haven't tried the MS patch yet.

I am on a Vista machine right now and post from it often, can post links, pictures, whatever.

Seems like some geeks are on a mission to stick one to MS.

As long as we don't end up with some apple machine I wouldn't mind so much. Apple is no better than MS just not as rich. If linux or some newcomer knocked MS off its thrown, that would be kind of cool actually, just hope there OS was not to different from windows (functionality).

As someone who reinstalled 98SE after spending a week with ME I can tell you Vista is not the first OS that had people clamoring to bring back the old. I think it depends what you're doing with it, as someone who has to fix them when they go bad Vista has worked very well for my sister and *me* in her laptop. Granted she's basically just using the internet and office apps and the like but it's been working out nicely.

Yeah, I think people are just overthinking something that doesn't warrant such attention.
