They'll get that just from watching Shatner from 65 to 94.

Kirk in "The Man Trap" on the night of September 8, 1966 was a cold, calculating hardass. In "I, Mudd" just a little over a year later he's full of wit and humor and goofy scheming to foil the crew's human and android adversaries, then in TMP is back to being more of an unsmiling hardass before swinging more human and being a more warm and embracing individual in the following TOS Era movies. Shatner was all over the place for nearly 30 years, in part because the role required him to evolve and change with the stories and be all over the place.

and Chris Pine's take on Kirk was him taking inspiration from Harrison Ford's Han Solo. until Into Darkness and Beyond where he loses his recklessnes and becomes a more modern starfleet officer.

I suppose that's probably true, but I find it hard to imagine that a significant percentage of viewership is comprised of such newbies. I doubt they're publishing the data, but I would actually be very curious to see the stats on the Paramount+ Trek shows.

My first exposure to Kirk was the TOS films. When I saw my first TOS and everyone was young and Scotty was thin and had no mo I was like "WTF is this?" Same with the Enterprise. "A satellite dish? Where's the blue deflector?"

LOL that is how you write a three dimensional character, yes.

that's funny, because I like his Spock more than Quinto's. I think in time, i may like his Spock more than LN's Spock.

And we're all better off for how the writers made James Kirk during those almost-30 years. I wouldn't have had it any other way.

Except in "Spock's Brain" and TMP.

I would have that be different.

i'll argue for Kirk the Jerk in TMP. He's been going through some stuff. He's not at his best, but that makes him a more real character. TMP Kirk is out of date but not "untested". He's frustrated and Decker is the object of lot of that. By TWOK he's sorted a lot of those issues out, though he's still coming to terms with not living the life he wants, and dealing with the regrets that come naturally at that juncture in life. TMP has its issues but i thought Shatner did a great job in the role, especially his interactions with Kelly. Kelly was at his best in TMP.

I thought Shatner was great in the role and Kirk as a jerk made less sense. He becomes the thing he gets annoyed about in TOS. It's aggravating, short sighted and does not reflect well of the character. None of that has anything to do with the acting.

Kirk in TMP has spent two and a half years as a desk jockey pushing paper and in a job where he wasn't feeling satisfied and trying to find a way to get out. He's still Kirk, just a little rusty after two and a half years of not wearing a Captain's uniform and sitting in the big chair. All things considered Shatner delivered in his first live action performance in the role in almost 10 years. It works for me.

Again, it has zero to do with the acting. I don't understand how my struggle with a character has to do with the acting...?:wtf::vulcan::sigh:

I hadn't even read your post when I typed that. Don't take offense, it wasn't even directed at you. I was replying to XCV330.
