Paul McGillian considered for Scotty role?

I think he'd be perfect. I had thought that the guy who played Carson Beckett would be great for it back when Trek XI was revealed to be a retro pic.

IIRC he was born in Scotland and raised in Canada, but did move back to Scotland for a couple years as a child.

He looks pretty much the part (including the younger Doohan chin, which is pretty distinctive... ie, before it went double!)

He sounds reasonably close to Doohan. And the odds are that he can do a phoney Scot accent just as well as Doohan could.

I can live with him in the role, definitely!

me too great choice. I am thinking isn't possible that casting people on XI are monitoring Star Trek sites because f.e both Quntio and Zoe Saldana names had been thrown out as potential actor/ress for Spock and Uhura on this site weeks before any rumors or news had been reported ;)

I had Paul McGillion pegged for the role of Scotty since I first saw him as Doctor Beckett on Atlantis two years ago, long before Abrams’ Trek XI was even a blip on the radar. It may not be immediately obvious to everyone as Beckett and Scotty are really quite different personality-wise, but there’s no mistaking the physical similarities, mannerisms, and of course the accent. Imagine Doctor Beckett with a bit more seasoned confidence, chest-out Gaelic gusto and that Scotty-esque twinkle in his eye. Oh, and lose the rooster crown hairdo. Frankly, I can’t think of a single other actor who could be more perfect for the role.

Ironically, at one time I had another Stargate: Atlantis actor pegged for the role of Spock: Joe Flannigan, who plays Colonel Shepard. I admit he’s over the age limit Abrams seems to have set, but watch him some time and tell me he doesn’t have a certain Spock-iness about him, especially his physical build and the way he moves. Not that I’m unhappy with Quinto in the role; quite the opposite.

^ I don't watch any of the SG shows, but I note that Joe Flanigan appears to be a popular choice to play Mackenzie Calhoun from the New Frontier novels in the Treklit forums.

As for McGillian, well, he looks quite like Doohan, apparently does a good Scottish accent and is the right age in relation to Quinto and Saldana.

I admit that I have an unspecified (and probably unreasonable) uneasiness with filling the Enterprise crew with actors from other sci-fi shows, but they could do worse than this guy, I suppose.

Flannigan would also be a good choice if they ever recast Indiana Jones--or Han Solo for that matter. He has the Harrison Ford thing down cold. Not that that has anything to do with the topic at hand.

Great choice. I couldnt be more pleased with that.

Oh, and Stargate rules!

Of all the casting choices and rumors floating around in regards to XI, McGillion has garnered the most positive reaction of any actor I've seen mentioned for any of the roles.

If he doesn't wind up landing the role, I will be extremely disappointed.

You must not get around much, then... because the casting of Quinto was almost universally approved!

I didn't say McGillion has gotten the 'only' positive reaction, just the most.

Quinto is an excellent choice and I agree with it. But on the news, I came across a number of places on the net where Quinto's casting was received at least mildly skeptically.

The mention of McGillion, however, seems to have started a revolution.

This is soooo weird.

I was going to start a thread on this very idea, only to find i am not the only person to think so.

There is even a slight resemblance in facial structure to jimmy as well.

I cant believe this has just happened, its rally odd, cos i said, if there wasnt anything up like this, i was going to start a thread.

I even have a photo manip of him in TOS redshirt, somewhere.

I never really cared for McGillion. His character on Atlantis always annoyed me. But everyone else seems to like the idea and I don't exactly have a favorite for the part.

McGillion gave a new interview and says that he already signed a confidentiality agreement and that Scotty will be "a significant part"
