How about Tevor Eve in Waking the Dead? Peter Firth in Spooks, Philip Glenister in Life on Mars and now Ashes to Ashes, Robert Vaughn in Hustle...and they're not exactly going to cast Gemma Atkinson as the new Miss Marple either!

How many of those series target audience is young children and their parents?

Ok then.

Sarah Jane Adventures. How old is Elisabeth Sladen again??

In a series where the rest of the cast are children, who in fact have the majority of the screen time.

Maybe they could bring John and Gillian from the original comics to balance out whatever octogenarian they cast as the new doctor?

Isn't Paul Kaye that fat comedian who says garlic bread or something?

I never understood why garlic bread was so funny but I do know he is even less liked than Katherine Tate.

That would be Peter Kay, and Catherine Tate. And Neither of them are disliked, in fact they're very popular. It's just fan boys will pick anything to whine about, and do it long enough, and loud enough that it sounds like everyone is doing it.

Well, I don't know about that Peter Kaye bloke. I saw him on Parky once and he seemed a bit too "on", you know in the same way you can only take so much of Robin Williams before you want to slap him round the head and tell him just to shut the fuck up. He seemed a little bit too try hard.

Anyway, as for Catherine Tate, yeah, I kinda got that it was mainly fanboys when she was announced as the companion for TRB two years ago. Since nobody outside England knew who she was, we didn't care! I saw all the fanboys on here go into epilleptic seizures however. Once I saw TRB I thought she was a SCREAM! Myself and several friends here had the same reaction at the end, that it would be GREAT if she stayed as a companion. Imagine how we all felt when it was announced!!!

I personally do not know what the fanboys have a problem with. I enjoyed her show and found her catchphrases and characters no more annoying than Little Britain, which I feel is a little over-rated and its repetitive sketches(virtually the same every week)get much more annnoying much quicker.

Anyway, as I said, I pretty much knew it was just the fanbitches that had a problem with her and personally, I found that Kaye guy more of a pain in the arse than CT. I can imagine being at a party with him and he'd be the stereotypical loud fat guy who thinks he is SO funny and tries to be as loud as possible. He'd really be a pain.

The show is called the Sarah Jane Adventures, she is clearly the lead character.

At the end of the day I was responding to a comment about how many BBC shows had older leads. I've given multiple examples of this, including one that is a kids show.

Let's face it though, in the 1970s it's not like the cast of Why Don't You were all 45, they were kids. Same with Grange Hill, the adults were just there because its hard to have a school without them. The kids were the main characters.

Peter Kaye. He's funny cos he's fat and from Bolton...at least that's the impression I get.

As for Tate. It is worth pointing out that it isn't just fanboys who get annoyed by her. She's quite a divisive commediene anyway. Lots of my friends- who aren't Who fanboys- hated her in Runaway Bride.

Me I hated her for the first half of RB, but she had really grown on me by the end.

Some of her comedy is actually very clever- cleverer than Little Britain- but much like LB the Catherine Tate Show is very hit and miss, and as funny as her characters can be, once you've heard people at work saying 'Am I bovvered' or 'How Very Dare You' 1245718 times, the catchphrases get bloody annoying!
Her version of Life on Mars set in the 50s is funny though, and I love her shelter for abused redheads.

She's a redhead, so by law I have to love her...

^To be fair though 99% of sketch shows are the same. Even The Fast Show, Harry Enfield and Friends, etc. Which seem to be considered classics. So you can't put it down for being repetitive, any more than any other Sketch show.

Peter Kay is funny, because of the nostalgia angle, mostly. Problem is, he doesn't seem to pick up much new material. There's jokes I've seen him do, from the first time he was on Comedy Store on Paramount, to his last DVD, so his stand up gets old, and his TV shows, as far as I've seen have been a bit love it, or hate it.

Yeah I guess you're right. I think a lot of stand up comics reuse jokes.

That said I still laugh when Bill Bailey does his:

"I'm Aled Jones. It's all gone wrong for me." line

I find your lack of faith disturbing...
Think Berman and Braga rather than RTD...

Pity Chibnall is leaving the BBC to run "Law & Order: London".

Oopsie!

Gasp! Shock!

And of course once you leave the BBC to work for ITV you can never come back

Running LAO:LOn is all part of his training.

the egg won't be on my face when this comes to pass!

Wouldn't he be better as Gimli the Dwarf in Lord of the Rings?

Maybe there'll be room for a West Country Dwarf in the Hobbit movies.

^Ahhh, Bill Bailey fans! More power to ya!

PS, off topic: make sure he's the UK representative in Eurovision this year!)

Also, I doubt Patrick Stewart would want to be the lead character on another Sci-Fi show.

I think Stewart would be okay with a steady paycheck, a stable franchise, and a niche' into the youth market. That's not to sell the actor short, or anything. Patrick Stewart is hard-as-fuck. I love him. But, it's okay to look at it from a financial point of view. It's not exactly like he's tearing through Hollywood right now.

Personally, though, I do NOT want him to play The Doctor. It would be too much of "Patrick Stewart as The Doctor", rather than it just being "The Doctor". I could be wrong, of course. He could shock the hell out of me.

I would rather like to see him in a recurring role, ala' a new Brigadier for UNIT or something...

No, no...don't try and sell it to us. You're either right, or you're wrong. But, don't battle it out. Don't try and force and debate anyone over what you claim to know, as opposed to whether they believe you or not. You'll either be vindicated or shamed. ;)

And, for the record, you're quite odd to me. In a good way, natch. But, I remember when I was bad-mouthing RTD once on these boards, you quietly stated that he's "quite a nice man". I took this certainty from your statement to mean you actually either work with or around him. And thus, it's possible you actually have sincere foreknowledge of what's to come. Then again, you could just be talking out of your ass for a laugh. Either way, I think it's fun, and I enjoy your cryptic remarks from time to time.

But, if you push it and keep trying to sell it, then I'm going to have to demand some form of reason or proof as to how/why you know this.

Remain enigmatic...it's for the best...

I'm sure Patrick Stewart doesn't need the cash. I agree that I wouldn't want to see him play the doctor. Much like Professor X was just Picard in a wheelchair I wouldn't want to see Picard in the TARDIS. Agree about a reccurring role though. Think he'd make a good Brig, but I'd still love to see Idris elba do that!

I would love to see an older doctor again. Maybe not Hartnell old but say in his early fifties. If we are going to swap Doctors out every couple of years, I'd like to see a BIG change. Kinda like how we go from young pretty Companion(Rose and Martha)to older frumpier one in Donna.
I would love to see that too, but if you take a look at the other shows the BBC has on at that time on a Saturday night when Dr Who is resting what have you got 'Robin Hood' No old lead there. Infact how many shows have an old lead actor? Not many. Only actors like the late John Thaw and David Jason get lead roles on TV these days in England. It all comes down to the lack of risk taking.

Heck even Barrowman is over forty now!

I see no reason why the next Dr wouldn't be in his early to mid forties. Whilst youf seems to get a buzz out of tv execs these days it's worth remembering that Who, like Bond, needs to have a certain experience about him that few young actors can pull off (though Tennant and Davison obviously can/did).

Plus the population is aging, so sooner or later the old will outnumber the young in the focus groups!

Trevor Eve falls into the John Thaw old school part of the furniture of British TV. John Simm is the lead in Life on Mars. Robert Vaughn is in Hustle to put bums on seats again he is old school. Yer Mis Marpel is not going to be played by Billy Piper but that is not a show in Dr Who's market. As for John Barrowman I would not say he was too old he is only forty that is the age of Tom Baker was, though I think these days that would be pushing it. I agree it is not right, it's just the way it is right now. These things go around in cycles so I think it will change. As I have said it will take just one show to take a risk and be successful and there will be a rush to make more.
