Patrick Flueger (The 4400) for young James T. Kirk!

Considering Zach Quinto was hired due to talent and a vague resemblence to Nimoy; I believe the Kirk actor should also resemble a younger Shatner.

Patrick Flueger has the right look and talent. Like Quinto, he already has experience starring in a great scifi series, The 4400 (which is actually a very similar show to Heroes) for three seasons.

Considering Matt Damon's comments of this Kirk being out of the Academy in his 20s; Patrick is the perfect age.

Heres some pics;

Personally, I think he'd be perfect for what they want. What do you think?

If he wasn't "too old", I'd suggest his Uncle Tom. (Given the family relationship between Gretsch and Shatner as well)

I voted no.
To me, this is Kirk:

I don't mean there's no one else but the Shat to portray Kirk, but when you look at what's emanating from that pic, you get what it's like to be Kirk.
I'm sorry but Flueger does not.

Plus the guy is like 23, There is no way they're going to have the patience to do 3-4 movies before giving him a captaincy. They need to cast CAPTAIN kirk, not James T. Kirk the bookish academy student. 30ish seems like the youngest they could go with him. Young enough to still be a rising star, but not so young he won't look right in the captain's chair within a few years.

But Matt Damon confirmed JJ said Kirk would be in his 20s.

A 24 year old actor would be perfect for a fresh out of Academy Kirk in story like this. Brandon Routh was 24 when he was first cast as Superman too.

I think they should at least give him a screentest. Hes worked with great actors; like Trek veteran Jeffrey Combs and can handle dramatic intensity because of his character on 4400. Not to mention, his status as an actor is pretty much identical to Quinto prior to being cast as Spock.

No, Matt Damon assumed they were looking for someone in his 20s.

Besides, the actor could be 26, 27, 28 and oh God, even 29!

;)

I wouldn't say that. Quinto is playing the villain in the breakout network TV hit of the last season. Fleuger plays a role in a moderately successful cable sci-fi show. I would say that of the two Quinto has far more buzz surrounding him right now.

Having said that, I could see Flueger in the role. He can act well and has the right look for a young Kirk. He could certainly do it, but I'm not sure that as an actor he has the right sort of image that TPTB seem to be going for with this movie.

Well assuming hes right and they are going for a mid 20s Kirk; Patrick would be a good call. According to the Trek Chronology, Kirk is some years younger than Spock too.

Flueger comes off older than his age on the show IMO

He looks like a mix of Conner Trineer (Trip) and a young Shatner. Given the right hairstyle and clothes; I think he could look very believeable as the young James Kirk.

True but Flueger has been on the show as a main regular for three seasons; the show has an existing scifi fanbase. Thats always a good thing.

nah, looks a little too boy-bandish to me. The other cast members might injure themselves on those cheekbones.

But don't let anyone think that means that I'm with the "only the Shat" crowd. But not this fellow, at least not from what's posted...

Hardly winning me over with this one. Routh looked like Superboy, not Superman.

Kirk is like Bond: we may hear stories about his charming youthful exploits as a precocious kid. . . but I never want to see him as anything but a man.

Who wants a trilogy of "The New Kirk and Spock Adventures"? Certainly not me. I want Captain Kirk and the Enterprise and I know I'm not alone.

Kirk didnt get the Enterprise till he was older; in his 30s. He was 34 in the early days of TOS.

So if Damon is right about Kirk in his 20s.... I guess maybe you just wouldnt enjoy the film as much.

FYI I thought Brandon Routh was awesome. There wasnt anyone else in Hollywood that would have worked in the role.

American action movie audiences aren't going to get out to the theaters for "James T. Kirk and the Chamber of Starfleet." A series of STAR TREK movies set around anything other than Kirk as Captain or in the process of ascending to the captaincy will not work. It would be like setting "Casino Royale" around James Bond's time in the Royal Navy.

Hey dont try to convince me. Take it up with JJ if the 20-something Kirk pre-Enterprise turns out to be true. I'm just going by what we've heard so far and a younger Kirk in his 20s before the Enterprise is possible.

And I'm just saying who I would cast for it assuming they went down the route of the 20 something younger Kirk (thats why I put YOUNG James Kirk in the thread title).

i'm not a fan of skewing younger, but he works. i like him in the 4400, i'd expect he could pull off a decent kirk.
