Patrick Dempsey wants to play Doctor Strange

And I don't see Strange and Stark as all that similar.
They look alike (handsome, dark hair, mustache) and they are both charismatic egotists who become rather eccentric, flamboyant superheroes. That's more than enough to confuse a movie audience.

As for the other roles, I always envision Umar as Angelica Huston. I doubt Gigi Edgely is high profile enough to play Clea, but she'd be perfect.

Young Gigi or Gigi now?

Purely think about cute little things with platinum blonde hair...

What about that Speedster girl from heroes?

I don't know. I don't think of Doctor Strange as a flamboyant superhero. Unlike Iron Man, who is a public figure, and Tony Stark, who is even more so, I always got the impression that Doctor Strange was unknown to the general public. He was known only among occult circles and the superheroes he occasionally associated with.

And, of course, Iron Man is all about science and technology, whereas Dr. Strange deals with the spooky and supernatural . . ..

Morgana Blessing, an old girl Friend, wrote a well received and popular tell-all book about Doctor Strange, where I think it was in issue 9 of Sorcerer Supreme which was nothing but text/excerpts from the "Novel" and stills supposing that the comic is really an issue of NOW Magazine ( A Girls Own Publication by J. Jonah Jameson) as is.

I told Roy Thomas at a convention that it was about the most awesome comic I had ever seen because it was as off book as it was interesting, and he replied that the artists had fucked up and it was just a gimmick to keep with the shipping schedules, but he appreciated the praise.

The world knows about Doctor Strange in great detail.

This is how I see it. Doctor Strange fell from grace, hit rock bottom and constructed himself as a better redeemed man. Stark has been falling form grace since 1963 and the frakking bottom in no where in sight. Doctor Strange was an asshole, Tony Stark IS an asshole.

It's all about Hubris.

With that outfit, how could he not be? :rommie: Even by superhero standards, it's pretty out there.

The way I see it, Strange had the good fortune to discover wild-ass eldricht realms that were better than any drugs ever invented, which gave him purpose and focus, and distracted him from ego and self-pity. Poor Tony, if only he had become the Sorcerer Supreme instead of a tin-plated capitalist piggy, maybe he could have given up booze.

According to Congressional Vetting when Stark during the appointment process to become the US Secretary of Defence (The story arc was titled "The Iron Maiden". 10 years back almost.) Stark has a mechanical liver these days which will not process alcohol... Although it was a throwaway line any writer later on can retroactively defy.

Chemical dependency does exist, hell it thrives, but psychologically, alcoholism has little to do with actual alcohol.

Stark's problem these days express thmselves as power brokering and empire building. He's overconpensating against the powerlessness of a drunken stupor by trying to be some sort of lord godking prime mover. Of course he can only do that for so long before he either snaps or the world explodes out from under him.

Which it has, does and will do so again.

Back in the 90s it was suggested that Stark didn't drink as much as he thought he did and all along that his white knuckle drunk blackouts, weeks at a time unaccounted for, there was actually a compartmentalized version of his personality assuming dominance under the thrall of the time travelling despot Kang the Conqueror using him him for subtle missions of assassination and evil.

Stark did a lot of bad things for a very long time. When his true colours were revealed, Stark killed an Avenger, threatened a lot more and furthermore murdered the nanny of Magnetos granddaughter. He had to do what he was told because Kang had proven that following his own will was only going to destroy everything, once more acceding to a stupor of powerlessness since the universe is so much safer when he doesn't make decisions.

Again, present and future writers can defy and ignore any of this, especially since Stark was killed replaced by a younger version of himself from a mirror universe and then absorbed into gestalt of Magneto and Xavier's sexual repression and reconstituted by Franklin Richards impression of his glorious Starkness on Counter Earth on the other side of the Sun equal and opposite to our Earth...

Dempsey has shown he can do most of this from dealing with the inevitability of his wife's Altimeters, once or twice losing a patient and bawling or crawling into the bottle and abandoning the hospital to play golf in the woods, and then of course his guilt about lighting up the shooting at the end of last season which lead to his abrupt resignation as Chief.

There's too much useless bullshit in my brain.

An interesting bit of comics trivia: Strange's origin was actually something of an afterthought. Originally, he was just this enigmatic figure like the Phantom Stranger or something. He was already established as the Master of the Mystic Arts in his first appearances. It was only later that Stan Lee got around to giving him a backstory.

To me, the comics' high point was the Steve Englehart era back in the seventies, as illustrated by Frank Brunner and later Gene Colan.
