Past Enemies, Present Allies
By Marie Nomad
Admiral McCoy wandered through the ship’s sickbay. He studied the different technology. Over a hundred years ago, things were different, he was thankful for the advances. “Not bad.” He felt a faint chill in his bones, he looked up to see a Klingon in a Starfleet uniform standing there, at attention. He had short hair and wore a sash proudly.
“Hello, there, young fella.” McCoy said as he studied the Klingon. “What’s your name?”
“I am Lieutenant Worf, sir.” He said in a military way. He paused at the end as if he was going to say something else but stopped.
“I see. I knew a ‘Worf’, he was a lawyer who defended Captain James T. Kirk and his crew, including me.”
Worf nodded. “I was named after my grandfather.”
“I see. He did the best he could, defending us.” McCoy nodded. He could remember a time when the Federation and Klingons were at odds with each other. Even after the treaty, things were difficult between the two. It wasn’t until another Enterprise had sacrificed itself, defending Klingons that the Klingons became more open minded. One Enterprise fought the Klingons, another saved the Klingons, and now there’s a Klingon on the ship as an officer of this Enterprise. He smiled. “You have a heavy burden on you.”
“I am aware of my status, sir.”
“Calm down, will you?”
“But sir, I am a Klingon.” Worf’s voice was questioning, as if McCoy had said something insane. The boy probably had faced humans telling him that Klingons and humans are enemies.
“And I’m a human, so what?” Admiral McCoy said as he gestured to his badge. “Just remember this, this uniform, you are part of a family. Klingon, human, doesn’t matter. Heck, maybe this ship needs a good strong Klingon to protect it.”
“Thank you, sir.” Worf relaxed slightly but remained at attention. McCoy nodded as he walked down the hallway to the spaceshuttle. He remembered the Organians, the super powerful race that are beyond their understanding and how that they had predicted that the Klingons and Federation will be allies. They were right and he was glad to finally live to see it happen.
