Party like it's 1966!

I remember in some of the novels they tried to say Rand was 15 pretending to be 16 to serve in Starfleet when she started on their Enterprise - despite the actress being in her 30's.....

On screen they've established pretty well that people join the Academy as a teen and can be assigned to active duty pretty soon afterwards. DS9 even had a war ship crewed entirely by teens.

That was Enterprise: The First Adventure by Vonda N. McIntyre.

I think yeomen were supposed to be enlisted, for one thing. No Academy.

The engineering set makes it's first appearance as the gym, right?
In airdate order, I guess. In production order, Engineering appears earlier in "The Enemy Within" and "The Naked Time".

The Enterprise has 17 year-olds as crew? Wild.

Sure. The past British and U.S. navies had future officers aboard ship at age 11.

I was just reading a biography of James Gordon, who served in the Royal Navy from 1793 to 1869. Yes, 75 years active duty, from age 11 to 86. The last few decades he was head of Greenwich Hospital, a home for disabled or elderly Navy veterans.

Kyle wore both, didn't he?

I'm going to be perfectly honest here.

I've been watching Trek since before I have memory of, well, anything. It likely played while I was in my crib. I've seen every episode of TOS countless times, but until seeing a special feature on the new TWOK Blue Ray this summer where it was specifically pointed out I had no idea Kyle existed and served in TOS and on the Reliant.

You are obviously not a John Winston fan then, Wayoung!

Your agonizer, please. :vulcan: [<-- Just add a goatee.]

Maybe you recall Mr. Cowl then?:)

I actually didn't realize it was Kyle on the Reliant in TWOK (even though he said his name) when I first saw it in the theatre, might only have been after I read the novelization that I did.
