Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow...

Too Much Fun

On Monday I'm leaving Canada for a job in England. I will be there for at least six months, possibly more if it goes well. Before I left, I felt it necessary to thank everyone here for helping me through the five month unemployed period I had to endure before I got the job offer last month. I'll never forget how much people on this forum helped keep my spirits up so I didn't get too depressed as the job hunt dragged on.

I've quit many Internet forums over the years due to people being rude and obnoxious, but since I first joined this site, I've always been impressed by how people here are so polite, even when they disagree with me. Usually the worst thing that happens to me here is that threads I start die quickly (i.e. get hardly any replies before they disappear to the bottom of the page), and even though I hate when that happens, it's a hell of a lot better than being insulted all the time.

I only know one person in the U.K. (a friend I worked with at a different job a few years ago), so I'm hoping I can maybe meet some of you U.K. BBS members while I'm there (perhaps at a Star Trek convention?). I don't have much experience meeting people I know from the Internet 'in real life', but based on how cool everyone here has been, I have nothing but positive expectations.

I might be away from TrekBBS for a little while next month while I'm getting settled, but I don't think I'll ever be able to leave permanently. I love it here too much. Along with a general thank you to everyone for being so kind and considerate, I must give special thanks to those who enthusiastically kept some of my threads rolling with consistently smart, entertaining, and thoughtful discussion. Of all the souls I have encountered in my (Internet) travels, yours were the most...human.:wah: Stay classy, folks. :techman:

Good luck in your new adventure, Too Much Fun! Although we haven't interacted much, I value your contributions to the community.

Congrats on getting a job!

But why do you have to leave the trekbbs? I know people in England who belong to this site.

^ I think it's just the standard disruptions common to moving somewhere else. You know, phone service, cable service, what have you. She'll be back. No one leaves.

Congratulations, TMF. ;)

^ Oh. I interpreted "parting is such sweet sorrow" as something permanent.

I did too, at first, then I noticed where she mentioned that she would be gone while she was getting settled. We've moved several times during my tenure here at TBBS, and it's always anywhere from a week to a month where I can't logon.

It's always torture.

Congratulations on the new job, TMF! Best of luck with your adventures across the pond. :bolian:

On a related note, my sister is also going to England in a few weeks for a job as a teacher, as are several of her friends, apparently. I guess that's the place to be... or is there some sort of mass exodus from southern Ontario that no one told me about?

And you damn well better be back on the BBS eventually -- I know for a fact that they have this internet thingy in England now, so no excuses! ;)

She'll be back. No one leaves.

TMF is actually a he, though I understand if his frequent Jadzia Dax avatars may have confused the issue. :D

Good luck on the move and settling in Too Much Fun. Hope the transition goes smoothly and congrats on getting the new job. :techman:

Good luck in England, TMF. :bolian: Since they do indeed have Internet in England (although the access equipment all has brass knobs and is steam-powered), and since this is just a temporary disruption in your membership, I won't close this Thread as I would have a real "quitting the BBS" Thread.

We look forward to having you back when you settle in.

Welcome to the UK, Too Much Fun! I hope you enjoy your time here. :) You shouldn't be off the net and the bbs very long: there's wifi in loads of places, cafes, trains, that kind of thing over here before you get your own ip set up.

Eh, you're just jealous of our steampunkiness. And you forgot to mention the hamster wheels.

TMF, I'm also a Canuck living in England, though I've made England my permanent home. Whereabouts in England will you be? Good luck with the move, and I hope you settle in quickly.

P.S. Try the real ale. :bolian:

HUH! I always thought TMF was a woman too!

Well, regardless, congrats on the new job TMF! How very exciting for you! I'm happy jealous! We shall miss you while your busy getting set up and look forward to your return when life settles down for you. ENJOY!

Too Much Fun,

:beer:Congratulations on the new job! Best Wishes for this new chapter in your life! I look forward to seeing you around the board once you're back online. :)
Take care!

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa Nellie

Welcome to the freezing UK. What time of Job are you doing while you are over here?

Hey folks, just stopping by for a quick update. I've been in England for almost a month now and haven't had much Internet access. I didn't want to come back here until I had steady Internet access, but that's been harder to get a hold of than I expected. Part of the reason is because I've been so busy. To those asking, I came here to teach English. The title of this thread is a bit of a reference to that since I knew I'd be teaching Shakespeare.

Things are kind of up in the air now. Looks like I won't be staying here as long as I anticipated, but I don't know how long yet. Anyway, I've missed TrekBBS dearly and I hope to start contributing regularly again soon, whether it's once I've settled in more over here (and have consistent Internet access), or after going back home. I miss you all...thank you for the kind words of encouragement. I hope everyone else is doing all right. Kaplah!

I hope you aren't having any problems that are causing you to return earlier than expected.
