Parody of Giacchiono's Star Trek theme music.

mverta, a member from the RPF who joined here a while back (but hasn't posted much) put up a parody/commentary version of Giacchanio's theme from the movie on his website. Even though I liked most of the film, I have to agree the music isn't much, and...well, the bit about it being loud is spot on.

Spot on! During the film, I often found myself yearning for Jerry Goldsmith to get his groove on. Sadly, he's no longer with us, so I guess we gotta settle.

Still, it's better than Dennis McCarthy's way too understated Star Trek: Generations score.

I have to respectfully disagree, I thought it was a very good score, which took me back to some of the stylistic qualities of TOS's score, while maintaining a modern sound to it. The theme is not as bad as you make it out to be. It had it's soft tender moments. And it was not all loud all the time.

I was unimpressed with the score before I saw the movie, but thought it was just fine in context - particularly as there was more to it than the 45 minutes on the CD.

You know what? I love the score during the "cadets muster out" and "Kirk sees the Enterprise for the first time" sequence. I prefer the reveal in this movie to the endless flyby in ST:TMP.

Yes, but not by recycling themes from the old Trek movies. Including the theme from the original, at the end, is a special case.

For most of the film, the score was nothing special - but the music for the opening segment is pure gold. Of course it helped to not have it drowned out by sound effects all the time.

Yes, and I was kinda surprised by that. Struck me as a bit unprofessional. I could definitely see some numbnuts in the Trek Art forum posting something like this, but Verta (supposedly) is a colleague/competitor of Giacchino's. Seemed kind of childish to me.

At what point did I indicate that I thought recycling old themes would have been an improvement? I don't. In fact, I almost with the TOS theme hadn't been used either. But the score as it is is just kind of loud blandness. It gets the job done, but I don't find it inspired.

Don't hang around the off-topic forum on the RPF, then. Mr. Verta has a definite misanthropic streak and a strong negative opinion of pretty much anything modern Hollywood. He's kind of like the resident CRA, only with actual industry experience to back up his arguments.

The score had me underwhelmed; it wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly inspiring either. My first impression was that it had a Danny-Elfman-comic-book-movie-score feel. Perhaps Bear McCreary would have been a better choice for a more measured--and less loud--score.

I spent yesterday evening re-watching Vertigo, scored by Bernard Herrmann. Now that is movie music, which could, incidentally, also exist alone as a fine composition. Giacchiono's score was simply not on the same level, though perhaps it is a bit unfair to compare him to someone as talented as Herrmann.

I liked the spin on the DS9 theme as the Generations theme. But the rest was underwhelming.

Well, TMP's score was a piece of excellent composition, so a little "inspiration" (not in the John Williams sense) would have been fine--and welcome.

I wanted this film to establish its own characteristic melody with no more than a hint of the classic fanfare or theme. But Giacchiono's score was disappointing. I loved his work for The Incredibles -- I listen to it often -- and was really excited at the prospect of him working on Trek, but what he produced for the latter movie makes me think he just wasn't enthused by the project or something.
