Paramount's marketing strategy

so were is the overseas publicity on this film.

What, you mean the big gala premieres in countries all over the world, ahead of the American premiere, where the stars and producers are available to the international press etc? Several countries a week,in fact?

You mean that overseas publicity?

No, you mean that some folks aren't seeing nearly as much paid advertising this week as would make them comfortable. That's fair, but to confuse it with the notion that Paramount isn't executing a pretty ambitious international campaign - the current details of which you may not agree with - is a little silly.

but how much attention does the average movie goer actually pay attention to the gala premieres????

how much awareness does it really bring??
unless you are a movie gossip hound or something similar.

i couldnt even give guess at which movies had premiers and where for the most part.

trailers, movie displays in theatres, and tv ads is what gets my attention.

it just sounds bad that the movie isnt being promoted seemingly outside of those premiers and the few interviews that happen around them.

especially when it seems wolverine is being heavily promoted overseas.

the more i read it seems that division of paramount has been in flux since last summer when they promoted people without checking with the person who would be their boss.
well their potential boss left .

i dont know.. i could understand this a month out but now it is a little more then two weeks.

like i said it is suprising they seemingly have dropped the ball overseas since they have done so well in the states getting the word out.

i hope that Spike will has some sort of Trek Marathon. god knows they play the hell out of Star Wars and CSI.

There is no gray area here - there is NO REAL PAID FOR PROMO for this film outside the USA.

The premieres mean very little to the average joe and they probably do not even know there was a prem.

Its TV spots, posters that sell a film. Star Trek is no where to be seen and Wolverine is everywhere. It is released just 1 week earlier than ST.

In the end it does not matter if ST gets 90% at rotten tomatoes, if it aint promoted no-one will turn up and it will make just what every other ST has, next to nothing.

If REAL promo does not start internationally this week, it will be too late and Paramount will have managed to snatch defeat from the hands of victory.

At least to me, there seems to be a TV spot every 30 minutes. I can't vouch for the posters, though.

Also, I seem to be seeing less of Wolverine and more of Star Trek. Then again, it's probably just me.

With all due respect, Wolverine does have the earlier release date. But Trek does seem to be more and more prominent with more promos every week.

As for overseas promotion, that does seem...disconcerting. They should be promoting more.

What is bad is all this advertising and new tv spots, not a one shows Nimoy or even his voice is heard when he is a major character and just advertising him would bring in more viewers..

They also have to be careful to not oversaturate the market with Trek promotions or they'll see a backlash.

Quality movie != big box office so Wolverine or whatever else movie competing against Trek could be bad but still win the box office. However, I think as long as a tentpole movie gets good reviews (from fans/critics), it generally does well at the box office.

I remember reading a while back about how all the promos can only get butts into opening weekend, word of mouth is what keeps a movie in the theater. A big budget movie will get people to see it, but returning customers will depend on the quality of the film.

I saw a huge billboard with one of the posters in London yesterday. So they are starting promoting it now:)

Hey look, my old(ish) thread! Well I guess Paramount had the right strategy judging from the results. And even if the domestic/foreign take was more skewed domestic than is normal for a summer blockbuster, the foreign results were better than usual for a Trek film.
