Paramount working on DS9 HD?

Warners should've spend the millions to upgrade the FX; that they didn't show how negligent they really are towards this franchise that they own, and also why fans tried to get JMS to buy the rights to Babylon 5 so that he could get it made at a company that cares (and also why they were willing to crowdsource fund said buyout.)
Should've or could've doesn't matter. Just like with DS9 and Voyager, it all comes down to whether Warner Brothers can justify the expense of redoing the effects for a proportionately small return on investment.

A fan campaign to get JMS to buy out the rights just for a remaster is well-meaning but wholly naive. That's just not realistic.

The expenses have got to be less today than even a few years. I mean as technology gets better their soon won't be any good excuse not to do it.

Given time and technology, the fans will do it and Paramount will miss the boat.

Fans are in fact already doing it, but the results are variable.

Five years at the most before we have a decent bootleg version (freely available if you know where to look).

Basically what I'm expecting. Which is exactly why I think that ultimately Paramount will want to beat them to the punch or one-up them. Five years from now, I expect the process to be cheap enough and refined enough that they won't have to worry about return-on-investment.

Will DS9-R and VOY-R be as good as TNG-R? No. But it'll be better than any fan attempt because the studio will have access to the film negatives. Where I expect Paramount to cut corners will be with the CGI. That CGI might be some super-refined upscale if they can't get access to it.

Fans only have access to poor quality source material, and don't own the copyright. Most people won't bother to access pirated copies of dubious quality, so I doubt Paramount will be too concerned about "missing the boat".

The big expense isn't the CGI, it's the team to source, scan in HD, reassemble and colour grade 176 episodes to match the original edit.

I suspect that Paramount are waiting for AI upscaling to get to the point where they can simply feed in the NTSC master tapes and get something out that looks decent enough with minimal effort. That would be a big shame, but probably better than nothing.

Come on Paramount! DS9 and VOY has to get remastered at some point, might as well get it over with and might as well do it right, like with TNG...
