The original version above is at slightly lower resolution than what you'll find on Netflix / P+. I compared the upscale with the Netflix version on my 65" screen and the difference is immediately apparent. To quote the uploader: "Not perfect by any means, but much much better than the original 480p."

Terrific job, I'd take it in a heartbeat. I see the rough edges, but... damn it. I'd take it.

Yes. The colors pop more.

Alongside the much sharper, higher resolution image.

The difference is less apparent in the embedded version. At the very least, watch it in full screen.
I will attempt. But, the difference does not feel that big to me.

Color me skeptical.

What are you skeptical of, exactly? It is a sharper, higher resolution image. I understand you have questioned the merit of the undertaking, but that is another matter.

Unless you genuinely don't see the difference, which is fine.

Gotta love those textures that disappear and reappear as if by magic. :ack:

At the end of the day this still relies on a transfer that could be much better...needs to be better.

It doesn’t look bad as such, but it has that unnatural edge sharpening that we just got rid of with the genuine 4K transfers of the films. And the detail simply isn't there.

I guess if you went back to the master tapes and made a new transfer and upscaled that, the results would be better. If it’s the only way DS9 will get remastered I suppose it would be better than nothing.

But I’d still be pushing for a genuine ground-up remaster rather than a “that’ll do” upscale, which would likely preclude the former from ever happening.

If a remaster of DS9 from the original film elements was going to happen, that would have been done after TNG was rebuilt and remastered. Hope I'm wrong, but given the expense and mind-boggling challenges involved, I don't think this is going to happen.

On this weeks episodes of Inglorious Treksperts Mark Altman confirmed Paramount is seeking bids at effects houses for the DS9 HD restoration.

Can anyone actually confirm this? Did anyone even see this podcast besides the OP? (I'm presuming it's a podcast.)

Altman seems to claim a lot of stuff lately that he assures is going to make the news rounds, but never does (like the supposed Romulan War spec script he says is awful). Frankly, I think he's further away from the actual news source than his long-ago days with Cinefantastique.

In the Babylon 5 episode they did they had a discussion about B5 being upscaled and it led to talk about DS9 and Voyager being redone in HD or whatever and the price someone was quoting was like a half season of Discovery to do every season of both shows. (Maybe it was more, maybe less, I don't remember specifically, it was weeks ago I listened to it. The point was that in comparison to even one full season of a new show it was a good idea). They made good points about it being futureproofed and being a good selling point because younger generations may not want to check it out in SD. The episode was a good listen for the B5 discussion alone.

I watched the clips and even without going fullscren what stuck out to me was the lack of haze. It totally confused me. I know from the TNG remaster that shot can look much clearer, but I thought that the hazy look of Deep Space Nine was an artistic choice. If you look at the white lights at the back of the bridge you can see what I mean: in the original the set appears smoky; the characters look vaguely sweaty, adding lots of tension. In that upscaling, that smoke is removed and the show looks too pure for its content, in my opinion. I know there is no real reason that a starship would have smoky air, unless it was under attack or having a malfunction, but for the Defiant on the Deep Space Nine station it made so much sense to me I always thought it was on purpose.

Maybe there is an intentional haze in Deep Space Nine and the upscaller removed it as a side effect?
