Paramount wants the next Trek to be in 3D

Skiffy fans are always a bit out-of-touch where popular entertainment - or anything popular - is concerned. Why do you think people call us 'nerds'?

Well, either get Star Trek done in 3D, or get it converted to 3D. This way or that way, it will be shown in 3D in theaters, like every other movie, too.

You're right -- but "converted to 3D" is often unimpressive, and could be a bit of a let-down to the casual ST fans who want to see it strictly for the "3D event" aspect.

The shortcoming of 3D in the Trek universe is the unfortunate fact that 3D doesn't work very well where you want it the most - in big space battles.

The ships are more or less framed against a black background. They won't 'pop out' as you'd want in Trek, unless you recreate the Battle in the Mutara Nebula in 3D.

My personal opinion on 3D - it's a new form of copy protection. Studios are pushing for it because you can't sneak a video camera into a 3D movie and replicate it on the web. At the same time, they can charge more for a movie ticket for the novelty.

Wouldn't a white ship against black 'pop out' even more?

:wtf:... err... I don't think so.

What the hell does the color of the background have to do with the 3D effect?

Actually it was a gigantic success and the acting, writing and production garnered critical acclaim and numerous industry awards. It continues to be the highest rated Trek movie on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. Thanks for playing, you lose.

RAMA

Um, no......No more so than any other movie that has came out. In my day, Trek was a household name. My 21 yr old wife, by contrast, has never heard of Trek.

Trek is dead, long live Trek.

Actually factually yes, it sold more tickets worldwide than any other ST movie, had bigger immediate box office. The ratings, as I mentioned are higher by fans and critics than any other ST movie on the aforementioned sites. Also, factually, it had more nominations, and more wins of more awards than any other ST movie, probably more than all the other ST movies combined. Including acting and writing awards (ST's first Writer's Guild nom, First Grammy nom, Hugo nom, SAG for cast-which it won, and many, many more). :techman:

Quite so. Also, it's an moviegoing experiance that can't be replaced by a home theater yet.

It may have been updated, because ST09 continued to make a little more money, but this is when it passed STTMP:

They still have the 2-D version.

Where I live if there is a 2D and a 3D version... the 2D version gets pushed out after a week or two to make room for the next movie.

Also, there are some near me that don't even have the 2D version of the film for opening weekend.

Space is not just a black background - stars, nebulae, comets, asteroids, the rest of the galaxy, is out there.

I am not saying that alone is enough to justify 3D but it could be made more visually interesting than you are imagining.

I would go to a 3D screening IF the 3D was intended from the start, not just added later as an afterthought.

I wasn't imagining that, and I don't think anticitizen was either since he mentioned nebulae. I was just explaining the technical aspect of flat colors in the background. And also, while having a more patterned background will work, there still needs to be a frame of reference to help with the 3D. So like a planet, or space station, or whatever. It then becomes very difficult to walk the line of being good in both 2D and 3D.
