Paramount wants the next Trek to be in 3D

Avatar is defnitely fun but, alas for Dennis, it's definitely a leave your brain at the door movie. He spent so long too, trying to convince people the story had some kind of third dimension to match the visuals. Trek XI was almost highbrow in comparison.

Agree completely.

"I think that's it really. I just had a hard time getting past how manipulative and simple the story was. Despite being really amazing visually.

The navi were a little too perfect and harmonious for a primitive culture. And the miliatary was a little too simplistic and destructive for an advanced culture. There wasn't any middle ground.

The ultimate irony with Avatar, for all the time and money to make this movie in 3d, the story and the characters were still stuck in one dimension."

Harry S. Plinkett (Red Letter Media)

See, that's exactly what I mean.

Yes, call her simple kiss to comfort her lover 'making out' just to cheapen that scene.

Why would calling it 'making out' cheapen the scene?

Because one person consoling the person she loves with a reassuring kiss, a person who is grief stricken and in need of support and comfort, is not "making out", and if you think it is, then you must see a shitload of people making out at funerals. Calling something like that "making out" does a disservice to both "making out", and consoling one's partner in a time of tragedy.

A much more inappropriate moment in the Spock/Uhura story is when Uhura gets Spock to change the duty roster. Who's actually the senior officer here? And who got sent to some other ship and to their death because of it?

Shhh... you're not suppose to criticize the movie. They'll hear you!

You usually don't see people kissing at all during funerals and other times of mourning. That's usually what hugs are for. I found the kissing to be a little too romantic than what the situation called for.

Oh well, not the greatest of problems I have with the film.

(the fact that Spock and Uhura shouldn't be in a relationship in the first place is a greater one...)

Clearly you fail to realize that no matter how senior a male officer is, the woman trumps all! Muh ha ha!

Whole lot of sex usually going on, though - just not openly in the church. A lot like weddings in that respect, maybe more so.

Having Spock and Uhura in a relationship, BTW, is brilliant - something like this is long overdue within the TOS-based part of the Franchise.

I'd like to see Uhura ditch Spock for Kirk. It would help advance her career now that Spock isn't her commanding officer any more.

Kirk and Uhura isn't nearly as interesting.

Kirk and Spock fighting over Uhura, kind of...but it's also predictable in a way that setting these two up together wasn't.

I wouldn't have minded if they had substituted Uhura for Nurse Chapel as the one harboring a secret, unrequited affection for Spock. But between the relationship, the anger management issues, and the lack of any science duties, they didn't leave much of the old Spock intact.

Spock has effectivly been neutered. Loss of Vulcan. Loss of Human mother. No real science duty. Giving up Vulcan heritage. Outranked by juvenile delinquent. Having to crawl back to Kirk and beg for job back.

Why would Uhura stay with him?

I'm not against the Spock/Uhura relationship in principle. Actually thought that Orci and Kurtzman picked up on some chemistry from The Original Series that I'd never considered before.

Execution of the relationship is a whole different matter. Uhura came off as a spoiled child when she didn't get the assignment she wanted and Spock came off worse by giving in and giving her the assignment. Spock still comes off looking bad if she was the most qualified candidate and he posted her elsewhere due to appearances... sacrificing the good of the ship he served on for a roll in the hay.

Spock allowed his libido to paint him into a corner (really working Kirk's side of the street there).

Then we have Uhura constantly leaving her post to comfort her man... showing a lack of professionalism.

Funny how a duiscussion about the film being in 3D turned into an argument about how much kissing there should be in a Trek film (mosty Trekkies would prefer none because it reminds them about what they're never going to do)

Funny. You speak as if you, yourself, were not a Trekkie, posting on a Star Trek message board.

...Curious. :vulcan:

I've noticed that to be the attitude toward people that don't like the new movie 'round here. They're just a bunch of nerd-ass Trekkies. Ironic, really.
