Paramount wants the next Trek to be in 3D

About 14 years ago, ABC ran a week of programming in 3-D if I recall correctly. Shows like Home Improvement, The Drew Carey Show, etc, were all in 3D that week. Wendy's fast food chain even gave out 3-D Glasses for this event. Being younger at the time, it was really cool to see these things in 3-D. However, when I see those particular episodes in reruns in 2D it kind of looks silly because they were "throwing" things at the Camera. Someone tripped toward the camera and "threw" a bowl of popcorn at the camera. Things were flying toward the camera, etc. Of course, they did that on purpose.

With 3-D films, I look for things where if I weren't watching in 3-D (aka watching in 2-D) then I'm not going to notice anything. I watched Avatar just fine in 2-D. 3-D did not seem like a necessity to enjoying it. I saw a demo at Best Buy of Avatar in 3-D through 3-D glasses and it was really well done, but I ended up forgetting what was going on behind the special effects (as well done as it was.)

So, while I may or may not choose to see the new Star Trek 3-D, we all have the choice to watch it in 2-D as normal and not watch it in 3-D if we object. We are not going to be forced to see it in 3-D if we don't want. Others may choose to do that vice versa. However, 3-D is not going to be the "only" way to see the new Star Trek film, therefore I would have no objection to the film being produced with 3-D in mind, as long as one group is not excluded from the viewing pleasure they come to expect from their preferred format.

So when it comes to 3-D, why not?

That sums it up for me as well. I'll see it in 3D (making it the first 3D movie I have seen) in the theater, and then own the blu-ray like I do STXI. Win/Win.

Well, as long as the 3D doesn't send me into some kind of fit.

Box office success is David's definition of "better". The more money it makes = the mroe tickets sold = better quality. Until Avatar, the best movie ever made was Titanic.

I'll go to see it whatever format. As will everyone here, even the ones who've already insisted they won't. Anything with Trek in the name is irresistible. Curiously enough, I think fewer people on the board have seen Avatar than in the general population. I admire their willpower.

I, too, think that he loves Twilight: New Moon and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen much more than Star Trek.

The main issue is, 3D is not a realistic illusion of depth (a conventional 2D movie is better) but it is an illusion of depth nonetheless and I think it can add a lot to the experience of watching certain kinds of movies when used well. I'm not an old fart being grumpy that things were better in the olden days, I'm just saying that for the most part 3D is very much a take it or leave it thing for me and I lean towards preferring my movies 2D, but I'm not closed minded to the idea of 3D either and it could work well in Star Trek.

The problem is, and we're already seeing it, is that studios are using 3D as a band aid to cover thinner and weaker stories and characters - its getting to the point where only shallow effects driven projects are being allocated decent budgets - films that are all about the 3D effect and less about plot, story, art or meaning are the only kinds of films that we'll see apart from the low budget indy scene going forward, and that is sad.

That's what I think, too. Saying that 3D as we have it now versus 2D can be compared to the evolution of vinyl to cd is a little far-fetched.

If there isn't a 2D version I won't be seeing it. Being blind in one eye means that all I see is a jumbled mess up on the screen... won't be wasting my money on it. I'll just read the novelization.

^Well, you could argue that CD is not necessarily superior to vinyl in all areas. Each format has a number of pros and cons. CD didn't replace vinyl purely because the sound quality was better (it isn't) its because CD's are so much more convenient, durable, portable and easy to use. MP3 isn't as good audio quality as CD but it too is taking over because of the convenience factor. Course 3D movies are far less convenient than 2D ones, especially in the home video arena due to the need to buy several pieces of hardware as well as separate glasses....

So yes, not really an effective analogy for 2D vs 3D movies especially when it makes more of a case against than for them!

Ever heard of those polarized glasses people use to watch these 3D movies? It works when you close one eye, so it should also work when you are blind in one eye.

Nope... saw Avatar in 3D because I had heard that I'd be able to enjoy it. Just a jumbled mess that had little to no color.

I think it ultimately makes no difference whether Avatar is seen 3D or 2D - the 3D effect was very subtle anyway. Only without the 3D it loses the one genuine selling point it has and becomes a generic, bland, uninspired and contrived movie with the usual plastic looking effects and no trace of a soul.

Basically, Avatar sucks imo, but the 3D effects made me wow at it when I first watched it. Now, I just think it's a lame rip-off and totally undeserving of the hype it got...not to mention the three million extended editions they released on dvd.

Good, are we done with the rants? ...Yes? Thank you.

I'm astonished that people STILL aren't finished calling it Ferngully with smurfs / Pocahontas in Space / a Dances with Wolves rip-off. Really people...it's neither funny nor especially original.
Even Avatar fans are very much aware that the plot isn't the greatest ever, but that doesn't necessarily make it a less enjoyable movie.

Nor, in fact, will those films be remembered for as long as Avatar (well, Dances might be) and certainly are nowhere as popular.

Pop quiz: how many versions of Romeo and Juliet had been staged before Shakespeare wrote his? It's possible that one of the earlier versions was better than his - if so, it's lost in obscurity and we will never know. ;)

The Star Trek movies are very weak tea in every respect, compared to Avatar.
