Paramount wants the next Trek to be in 3D

If they presented a Star Trek movie were the crew went to some weird planet or weird stuff was happening in the galaxy then the 3-D could work as a plot element and not as a special effect there for no reason.

As if that would happen though.

3D bandwagon has to be jumped on, it's the 'vogue' thing now.

I watched Avatar in the cinema in 3D. As a cinematic spectacle, very impressive. Vivid imagery, 3D beautifully used especially in the night time forest scenes. It was otherwise a fairly average film, with a weak story line.

Avatar sucked, the only cool thing about it was the 3D thing.

As for STXII... you're saying I'm going to get lens flare in 3D? Sweet.... :p

Sometimes I wonder if people actually know what they say when I read stuff like this.

Can anyone explain to me how 3D would work as a "plot element"? It's a technicality (and not a "special effect") like color, surround sound or widescreen. When has it ever been integral to the plot of a movie if you hear the sound in mono or 7.1 surround sound?

I really wish this 3-D trend would be given a rest. Extra money for an experience that doesn't add much to a film, woo-hoo!

Seriously? I don't understand all the hype 3D is getting. It's okay, but not that cool...it's definitely not worth the money they have us paying for it.

I can count the number of films I've seen at the cinema in the last decade on two hands, and of the last 3 two were 3D. The other was IMAX.

I haven't seen the last Star Trek film yet. But 3D would draw me in, darn it!

If they are able to push this with JJ then I'll go out of my way to hopefully see it normally. Not a big fan of 3D. I understand the mindset of execs but feel like this is just a fad that will expire after the next two or three years. What I'm more concerned is the delays with the screenplay. Everyone is busy now. It seems like they don't have the time to concentrate on the screenplay. Alex and Roberto are in pre-production for their directorial debut "Welcome to the People" starring Chris Pine. Damon has been writing stuff...just sold the new Ridley Scott sci-fi pic "Prometheus", and of course JJ has been working on "Super 8". I have a feeling Paramount is going to announce a push back date for Christmas 2012 if the delays keep happening. The script was originally supposed to be done before Christmas last month.

Well, either get Star Trek done in 3D, or get it converted to 3D. This way or that way, it will be shown in 3D in theaters, like every other movie, too.

If it gets pushed back, I would imagine it would come out Memorial Day weekend of 2013.

^ Even worse. Paramount shouldn't have announced the date in the first place if they were aware that JJ and company were busy.

They probably said that about sound, colour, widescreen, stereo-sound, surround-sound too.

Oh, and the CD, the DVD and bluray.

It's like I said, if they were on some wacky planet or some strange corner of the universe were crazy shit is happening you can use 3-D to drive home the weirdness of it all.

Like Oz being in colour.

I'm not a big fan of 3D in movies, but the next Star Trek does seem like a no-brainer to make in this manner.

Audiences will love the ships moving around in 3 dimensions through space battles and all that.

Normally I'm opposed to 3D but not always. Tron Legacy was a good fit for a 3D film as it takes place in a digital world and in fact, I think the film would lose a lot of its impact without the 3D presentation.

I can't really see 3D being a good idea with Trek which always had a "classic" film look and feel. Any normal 2D photo or film is already an illusion of 3 dimensional space - adding a pseudo "3D" effect on top of that seems pointless in most cases. What you end up with a lot is the impression that what you're watching is a series of 2 dimensional cutouts at different distances from your point of view, so often it makes films seem *less* three dimensional than they might otherwise appear.

Personally, I would never not go see a film because it wasn't in 3D and would never go see one just because it was in 3D. I imagine despite what the studios think, most people feel the same way.

What you describe is more the effect you get when you convert 2D to 3D. And the claim that it appears even less three dimensional... see above.
