Paramount ruins the trek movies with excessive DNR

It now seems almost certain that paramount accidentally used a 1080 i master of Trek 6 when they made the transfer instead of a 1080p one.

An unforgivable error. Plain old fashioned imcompetence.

I would really urge folks to avoid the full 6 pack of movies because this kind of error should not be accepted.

It is very unlikely that Paramount will admit the mistake and repress the discs.

I'm glad I got the smaller pack and will be happy to buy all 6 again if they do it right with Director's cuts.

Well of course 1080 i looks better than standard DVd but YES it's a huge gigantic deal. They have proclaimed blu-ray as the ultimate home video experience and and touted that all their players have 1080p and only a tiny handful of movies have been released--on purpose--in 1080 i and there was a great hue and cry about that.

So ACCIDENTALLY releasing a major catalog title in an inferior format is a terrible mistake.

If all you care about is getting an upgrade from standard DVD well okay then, but people are buying something labeled as something it is not.

If you bought and paid fora Corvette with the optional 500 horse power engine and later you find out they put in the 350 horse power engine you could say, "Well do i really need that much power anyway?"

Maybe not, but it's not really the point.

While I find the Blu-Ray screencaps a general improvement over DVD resolution (no duh), the color changes bother me. I wonder why some scenes seem to have radical color shifts, and others don't seem to have any at all.

I don't have a Blu-Ray deck or drive at this point anyway. Maybe with the next PC upgrade.

We might get better transfers on the director's cuts but I doubt they are going to fix it like they did with The Fifth Element.

What noticable difference would we see between 1080i and p?

Well all in know is TMP blew me away with its visual quality on BR, i have been truly amazed at how good the Movies and TOS on Br have come up.

The TMP BR screenshot makes the Enterprise look like a three foot toy model while the non BR shots look much better, except for the grain.

With 1080i, the TV is only displaying half the number of lines at any given moment. No idea how noticeable it is, though. But in principle...

Kind of like the problem when CFQ would run frame grabs from DS9 in their issues. They looked fine on the tube, but in still form, they were all stair-steppy (kind of like the sad effect when you'd freeze frame a CLV laserdisk, if you had the kind of player that would do that ... the great pic all of a sudden became alot less watchable.)

Can't believe I brought up laserdiscs again ... Would give them up if I could just get some way to transfer my THE LOUVRE laserdisks and TWILGHT'S LAST GLEAMING over to DVD without spending a mint ...

One thing I will say about Trek VI in 1080i/p, compared to the other films... although granted, I've only flicked through the rest... is that the actors faces look very waxy in some scenes, illustrated pretty well in the "melting Nimoy" screencap in the link on the opening post.

I don't think the other films suffer from this.
