This will directly affect the future of filmed Trek, as being folded into another studio could leave it fighting for release dates and may find it under the control of a franchise UNfriendly CEO (like Moonives).

By forming into a larger studio, Paramount would have access to greater assets, which could help with large projects, like Star Trek sequels. For the latest Star Trek film Paramount had brought on a financing partner (Spyglass). On the flip side, Star Trek would have to compete in the newly merged studio for resources and possible release slots. So if Paramount were to merge with Sony, this could affect the release dates of the Star Trek sequel (targeted for Summer 2011) and Spider-man 4 (which is now slated for May 6, 2011). A combined studio would likely want to put some room between those tentpoles to avoid competing with itself.

There is also always the factor of a change in management. The current Viacom and Paramount leaders (Philippe Dauman and Brad Grey) have been very pro-Star Trek and especially pro-JJ Abrams. The studio’s current strategy is to put a bigger emphasis on its franchises, including Star Trek. A big corporate merger could always result in new priorities and strategies, which may affect how the new entity deals with Star Trek.

business implications beyond Trek

Paramount is looking for another great performer for 2011 like JJ Abrams Trek XI this year. Same writers, same director.
If they do not greenlight 2 films back to back production I think JJ Abrams will NOT be directing Trek XIII.

I believe if Paramount merges with Sony then Sony will control MGM, Columbia, Sony pictures, and Paramount's films and the Playstation Network direct to customer 1080p HD movie downloads may be a real market for Sony via PS3 in addition to Blu-ray sales.

IMO, Paramount is becoming more and more just a brand name these days and could go the way of Orion films, where it could wind up existing as a small unit of a larger studio...

Almost all Trek fans - better than nine out of ten - like it, and so does most everyone else who've seen it. Those are all the "reasons it's great" that are needed to justify continuing right down the present course rather than responding to the small amount of criticism it's received by changing it.

It usually doesn't in Hollywood, that's for sure. Why would anyone hate Star Trek, or anything else, so much that they refuse to use it to make $$$? Why prefer to make the same money off some stupid comic book character or a bunch of flying robots? Star Trek is no more childish or embarrassing than the usual summer blockbuster fodder.

Nope, TV space opera is still DOA. What the past 10 years has shown is that what works in movies doesn't necessarily work on TV. The day a space base show is a hit on broadcast tv is the day Moonvies will be on board with bringing Star Trek back to TV. Personally I hope Star Wars provides that day.

It is when you consider that it was complete crap, ultimately beaten by STAR TREK of all things, and showed a decline in sales when compared to the previous movie in the franchise

Well it was beaten by a hugely successful film in Star Trek, so not a surprise.

As for the diminishing returns, fairly standard, there will be at least two more x-men films.
