News Paramount confirms BOTH films still in development

On the film front, Paramount remains tight-lipped. The fourth in the current, “Kelvin” timeline (with foundational characters such as Kirk and Spock, but in the alternate timeline generated in the 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot movie) has hit a snag. The reported plot involves Kirk (Chris Pine) traveling to the past to team with his now-dead father (Chris Hemsworth), but contract talks with both actors are at an impasse. If the film indeed gets made by slated director S.J. Clarkson (Netflix’s “Jessica Jones”), it would mark the first time a woman has directed a “Star Trek” movie.

The second film fascinates: Director Quentin Tarantino pitched an idea that intrigued the studio enough to allow him to assemble a writers’ room. Paramount could not confirm to The Times that Tarantino would direct, nor that the studio was open to an R rating as rumors have had it, but did confirm both projects remain in development.​

I just wonder if Endgames ridiculous box office success has made Paramount think again about doing 'Trek Thor' ... and are preparing to pony up some extra cash for Hemsworth/Pine... (would probably have to get another director now though)

I highly doubt it. At this point there's just no interest in the Kelvin movies short of a QT movie hitting theatres, which again, I just don't see happening.

That's sadly called "Development hell". Not officially scrapped, but there are major hurdles for it to ever go forward, so it just... rests... on the plate of possible productions until something happens. Some movies have been in development hell for decades.

On top of that, if Paramount actually pulled the plug on both films, it would make it the first time since the cancellation of Planet of Titans that they had no new Star Trek projects in development whatsoever. Obviously that'd be largely in part due to the TV side splitting away with CBS, but it'd be a bit of negative publicity that they really don't need considering their current state.

I actually think Quentin Tarantino's movie is still exactly as likely or unlikely as it was when originally announced. How much that actually is? No idea though.

I'd definitely go see a well done movie featuring Pike, Spock, and Number One and that beautiful set from Discovery. I'd also be completely down for a movie that follows on to Star Trek Beyond well. And I'd go see a movie that features the two ships and casts teaming up (maybe in a third universe unfamiliar to both?) about 3 or 4 times - and I barely go to the theater anymore, so that's saying something.

Maybe not enough for a big budget blockbuster movie these days, but yep.

I think that one day there will be a Star Trek film that grosses one billion dollars because of the right script and right director. Star Trek has yet to find the right film story that attracts the masses.
It is all about the script.

This list of 29 billion dollar movies could have a Star Trek film among them one day if they just write a script that connects with the public as did these twenty-nine extremely different films.

When Trek makes a billion, it'll be due to inflation.
